Center Console Repair

When I bought the car, there were some serious scratches/paint rub off on the center console in the area of the emergency brake handle. If you notice, all previous pictures of the interior had a hat over the affected area.

I just could not stand it any more, so this afternoon after work, I removed the center console to paint those offending pieces. I did try sanding the affected areas with 1000 and 1500 grit sandpaper to smooth out the paint/plastic interfaces but I know if I use a smooth type paint they will still show through.

I could not decide on color. I know an exact match will not be possible so I am trying to be tasteful but distinctive.

I picked up a can of Metallic Silver (smooth paint), Metallic 'Hammered' Black and Metallic 'Hammered' Grey/Silver. The Hammered look will mask any imperfections that there are and is close to the original color.

The wife and I decided on the Hammered Grey/Silver. Not sure how it will look when installed. The parts are drying now. If I don't like it, I will try the Hammered Black.

If that still does not work, I may just have to go buy new pieces....

This is defiantly an experiment.

Very difficult to judge unless seen in real life, so comment is probably unfair.

It will be interesting to see what a hammered finish looks like installed.

I'd probably have tried a silver grey matt finish in a plastics specific paint with a matt glaze to give a bit of scratch resistance to it, but of course much depends on what interior you're matching to.

Good luck as you observe this is an experiment before if needed picking up new parts.

I actually think the Hammered Black would look good but my wife (the real owner) said to try the Silver/Grey first.

My interior is black with the silver bushed metal trim.

I have thought about a coat of polyurethane for protection but I think that would be too shiny. Something like 'Veriathain Diamond Finish'. That stuff is tough as nails....

Shipkiller How long did it take to remove the centre console?

I ask as I am replacing my trim and want a rough guide to plan.

thanks Steve

Two hours and I had to remove the screwdriver stuck in my head. No s**t....

Now I could do it in about an hour. Without the blood loss.

I still think that Hammered Black would look good. Maybe an subdued Red, to give the black interior some contrast....

Yes, the car need a good vacuuming.

Looks great! Heres a link for some same subject info. Under products, they do consoles for those who are not adventurous. Is that a CAC card I see on the floor?
