cd changer / amp questions

right, after 3 hours of tinkering i thought id post some questions.

basically i bought an aux in cable, finally fitted it today - one of the tabs in the vents you pull down was bent up so took a while. anyway all done but i thought whilst i was at it i would fill up the cd changer with a few discs, dont normally use cds as i have an iphone, but thought what the hell. basically the business cd headunit will control the changer fine, but i get no sound. also the aux in cable isnt working as expected, if i play a cd from the changer i can get the sound of my iphone via the aux in cable, but source only goes radio-cd-cd changer.

now to add to this my car does not have the original amp in the boot, and the small coaxial cable that should connect to the amp is disconnected as there is nothing on this current amp to plug it into, would i be right in thinking this would be the audio cable for the cd changer?

my next question is ive been hunting for a replacement bmw amp, would one from an x5 do?

im now toying with the idea of getting the audio system ripped out and replaced, as all i want is a nice simple system that will work, that i can integrate the iphone to easily and to have some sound from the 4 speakers behind the seat, i wont be doing this myself, id track down a local audio place i think.

sounds like the pin-outs are wrong where the aux in goes in.. did you mess with them?

that coax is the digital cable and yes thats why.. you seem to have a bizarre combination of things if you haven't yet got a Carver amp...

I might be totally wrong here, but from what I understand you have to choose between a line in and a changer.
They both use the same 'input' to the head unit.
Hence only the need for Radio - CD - CD Changer options as Changer is effectively Aux at the same time.

I have a BMW Accessories brochure here and even on that, under the ipod kit it says that CD Changer functionality will be lost with this option.

AUX-IN can live happily alongside the CD changer - it does in my car :D

the Ipod kit is different to the AUX-IN and does use the same pins as the CD changer hence why you lose the CD changer.

As for the OPs problem, crossed wires?

not messed with pin, just plugged the cable i got from ebay in. the amp in the car is a harmon kardon one, probably off an old 3 series from the research ive done, hence no coax. i wondered if this is why im getting odd results?

re the pins, as i didnt buy a specific z4 cable, it was a generic bmw one i guess that could be the reason why perhaps also?

overall if i cant source a correct amp, carver or not but at least compatible with the 10 speaker system & bmw changer im leaning towards changing head unit and taking it from there.on the up side im very happy with the sound from my iphone with the aux in cable, managed to route it the storage unit so everything is tucked away for now. hey ho, to be honest i only listen to music on the 10 min drive to work, rest of the time i like to hear the engine
