There's nothing like a thread such as this to bring out the holier-than-thou brigade. I sometimes wonder why some of them buy a sports car at all.

+ a great big 1

It's not about the fine.

OK £60 may be a lot to some people but really??
In the big scheme of things, compared to the cost of driving its nothing.

The biggest worry is the points and how they can accumulate if you are not a good boy. Points and the possibility of loosing my licence is my biggest worry.
I'd be happy to pay a bigger fine and not get points but then that wouldn't be fair because that wouldn't be a deterrent....

Exactly... the only time I've ever been done for speeding I was clocked at bang on 80mph in a 70 limit stretch of motorway. £60 fine? I'd happily have paid 10 times that to avoid the 5 years of heightened insurance premiums....

As I said in my earlier post, I didn't care about the fine, just the points - both for the potential implications if I was stopped again (I'm sure having a clean licence means that traffic cops are a little more lenient), and also the increased premiums.

Think yourself lucky it was only £60, if you were Richard Branson and you got caught doing 35mph in a 30 you'd be fined £60,000 if some of the jealous people on here had their way!! :headbang:
I'm not sure there is evidence of jealousy in the comments posted, more a concern that the system is inequitable as it stands. I suspect that everyone posting here can very easily afford £60. The inference I have drawn from the comments of others reflects my own opinion - that a £60 fine is grossly insufficient to act as a deterrent to drivers who aren't scrimping and saving, counting every penny. Where's the jealousy in that? :idunno:

I scrimped and saved to buy a bmw does that mean the fine should be less?

Ok, I stand corrected (said the man in orthopedic shoes) not so much jealousy on here but in the country generally. People think that the government should be the modern day Robin Hood getting the rich to pay for the poor.......wrong in my opinion when it come to punishments/fines!
You say the a fine of £60 doesn't mean a lot to well off people, but what do the 3 points mean to the chavy morons that drive without a licence/insurance? When they get caught they pay £1.00 a week for a couple of weeks then go and drive again anyway?
I think that the people who can't afford a £60 fine shouldn't have a car in the first place, get the bus with the other scrotes! :fuelfire:

Don't have to break speed limits to want a sportscar. I merely bought it 'coz it's all I need plus some outsized sunnies to look good  :driving:

Oi, I quite like the bus (especially top deck at the front  )

Me too, as does the offspring, who sees going on the bus as a rare treat. Although when you were a teenager, did you and your friends always want the back seat on the bus/coach ?

OG I agree with NDB.

Just because people buy sports cars doesn't mean they have to go tearing around everywhere on public roads.
If you bought one to do that, crack on, it's your funeral (eventually) or maybe someone else's.

Depends which bus your riding!
I would regard city centre buses more of a challenge than a treat

Only in the countryside daaaaarling, going from our commuter village to the nearest market town. Only happens about once a year, when I give in to the kid.

It's not about the rich paying for the poor....just that the disincentive created by the punishment should be the same for all. £60 is enough to make some think twice before speeding but not others.

I have an empty bank account and a clean license
so I would be more bothered by the £60 than the three points
(assuming insurance does not rise)

Neither will change my view of speeding.
Sometimes it is appropriate and much of the time it is loutish.

Personally I would get rid of speed limits and comprehensive insurance while hugely increasing the penalties for reckless, careless, etc. A £500 fine for running over a hedgehog. That kind of thing.

If we drive we are adult, part of being adult is responsible risk assessment and care for the common environment. The current system infantilises and absolves. It is time we were required to grow up.

I often wonder if the National speed limit changed would drivers drive any differently.
I think most people drive at a speed they are comfortable with, either for saving fuel or the safe being of themselves and people around them.
I just think it would be safer not to have such low speed limits as drivers become obsessed with their speedos instead of watching the road.
I have an 18 tonne 30ft Scania Motorhome which I can legally drive at 70mph on the motorway. I don't feel comfortable at anything over 65mph so i cruise at around 60-65mph.
At 70mph in the Zed my only fear would be falling asleep of boredom.

Have you ever driven on an autobahn in Germany - one second there is nothing in your rear view mirror, the next there is a big beamer/merc/audi bearing down on you at about 120 mph or more ! There is a reason that the Germans were the first to have civilian air ambulances, developed to get people who had smashed themselves to smithereens to hospital as quickly as possible.

Mind you to the German psyche, I think the right to do whatever speed you wish is a bit like the American right to bear arms.
