Caught doing 95 in a 70...

I love working and driving in Germany....

The driving standards, lane discipline and ability to merge in turn are far better than in the UK though...and of course you must have first aid training in order to obtain a driving licence and you have "duty to rescue" as well....

Maybe another good system is that they actually can impose heavy fines (suspension of the offender's driving licence for up to three months) not monetary ones   for tailgating..... although, I must say, I’ve never actually seen it enforced… but it is there!

At this point I must admit that the only time I have been flashed speeding, is twice in Germany  . never had a fine forwarded to me though.

OG I agree with NDB.

Just because people buy sports cars doesn't mean they have to go tearing around everywhere on public roads.
If you bought one to do that, crack on, it's your funeral (eventually) or maybe someone else's.

Carol, I didn't advocate "tearing around everywhere on public roads" though did I? :)

I just expressed frustration at people who are always willing to remind someone of the minutiae of the Highway Code when they've already admitted their breach of it. The same people seem to spend their entire time on forums like this with the sole intention of freeing their inner pedant. Life isn't black and white - you can do 70mph on the motorway in appalling conditions and be a fine upstanding member of the community in the strictest application of the law, yet you can do 95mph in fine conditions and light traffic, and be "tearing around on public roads" and a menace to society. Funny old world eh?

OG I think you've took me the wrong way. I didn't mean you in particular said that or even implied it. It was just a general comment about some people and how they drive.
I used the term 'you' as in a general you not 'you' personally. :? If you understand what I mean.

I agree with what you just said about motorway driving. The only difference for me is that you are less likely to have a pedestrian step out in front of you on a motorway.

You're right about people being hypocritical, I'm one of them sometimes. (But don't tell anyone I admitted that) :)

think the UK is promoting the wrong type of driving by the whole “speed kills” nonsense… Speed doesn’t kill… it never has and never will… yet as long as people now drive at 30/50/70mph they are considered “good” and “safe” drivers…

We need the police back on the roads to catch the poor driving, the tailgating, the random wandering about, the middle lane hoggers, the mobile users, etc etc….

I think it was Top Gear that done a nice little example of what I am taking about… they had a load of “terrorists” going by a speed camera, with bombs, missles etc and because it didn’t flash – they are “good drivers”… then a poor little old granny going to the shops, she of course triggers the camera and is prosecuted…

I feel it’s usually nothing more than revenue collection…Yes, we should all worry about inappropriate speed, at inappropriate times…. But speed isn’t black and white as to good and safe driving…and far too many people, especially in the UK believe it is….

I think you've taken the material in this thread completely out of context OG. I can't see any "holier-than-thou brigade" comments on the thread condemning ap123ap's driving or speed. The thread started out with people discussing whether OP could expect more than 3 points + £60....then the whole saga started of whether a blanket £60 fine is inequitable.

I understand your frustration but I believe it to be somewhat misplaced on this topic.

Wouldn't be the first time!

had a read of this thread, I got caught red handed at 91 yesterday lunchtime, £60 and 3 points - a fair result I say.

quite a hot topic.

the fines are now 'means tested' in Scotland anyway.... so the more you earn the more you get fined...

So, scumbag, sit at home all watching Jermey Kyle gets caught and will get a £20 fine, but if you are honest, hard working and out doing a shift, you could get fined £100/200/300 etc...

Very fair eh....

of course, they have no legal right to check up on what you out on the form, so you *could* decide what you are going to show...

What utter nonsense.

As others have mentioned, the punishment should be reflective of the relative means the person has to pay it [if such punishment is a fine]. Fortunately to me [and I'm guessing most here] a £60 wouldn't hurt that much, but to some people that could mean not being able to pay the gas bill that month.

This is also why income tax is relative, and why raising VAT hits poorest people harder. No offence but maybe put down the Daily Mail and pick up 'Economics for Dummies' instead.

it's not utter nonsense. you are only evaluating the speeding fine in isolation - many people who sit around all day living on handouts from the state have no concept of taking responsibility for anything or the consequence of actions, whether it's getting out of bed in the morning or driving a car outside the speed limit. I say many not all. Honest Joe often has many responsibilities to take on, driving home from his shift is the least of his worries.

how does raising VAT hit the poorest people harder? many 'essentials' are free from VAT, or VATable at a different rate. I suspect that maybe you have read economics for dummies, but perhaps you now need to consider its application in the real world.
