I know we've listed what we have owned in the past thought I'd list the ones that got away.... having looked at it really seriously test driven it ; got the insurance quote and then either the deal wasn't right or the sensible head took over...

Here's a few....

1. Alfa 147 1.9 JTD.......... talked through the deal but in the end salesman's attitude hacked me off so we ended up buying a std Imprezza instead.... glad we did 2 1/2 years later still got the imprezza and plan to keep it doubt the Alfa would be wearing so well by now.
2. Fiat Barchetta....... offered 400 less than the guy wanted and then walked away as my offer was 1k over Glass's..... sometimes wished I'd gone the extra bit.
3. Pug 306 Rallye.... found out it had had 4 owners in 14 months sensible head came on and I bought a 306 XSi instead.

be interested to see your list... mine is not a very exotic list .. someones bound to have looked at a Lotus Carlton or similar ... but the service book wasn't up to date..

Only the one,
4lt V8 Mustang convertible, bright red and chromed wheels, Was one day away from flying down to london to buy it when I saw the Zed.

It's amazing how much sales men alter ur choices , my ones that got away are
325 compact (e46) was lovely but sales wouldn't move at all on what was an overpriced car, so bought a mk4 golf gttdi

After the the gt u fancied a mk5 Gti but be treated me really badly over corroded wheels so I bought the z!

Brand new Z4 Coupe in Ruby Black with extended leather - Guy in the dealer just wasn't interested in selling it - got bored and moved on to a...

Z3M Coupe - Travelled down to Sheffield to try it, both me and the wife took turns in test driving, had the money all sorted out - but although the engine was superb, the car felt very old, so moved on much to the surprise of Mrs G.

Bought an RX8-PZ instead!
Then swapped it in for an 06 Z4 Coupe just like I'd originally wanted :D

Only mentioning the ones I physically looked at - not mentioning the numerous ones I research online and dream about...

Focus RS mk1 - viewed a couple when trying to get rid of my Clio, love them. Good examples were out of my budget at the time so I bought a Civic Type R instead, doh!

Honda Integra DC5 - viewed and considered at same time that I ended up with the Civic. I regret not spending the extra on the insurance an imported car would've cost as they're a much better car than the Civic - another doh!

VX220 2.2 n/a - almost bought one instead of the Z4. Test drove one briefly but had a few passenger rides in some forum member's cars. The struggle to get in and out of it put me off in the end. I reckon I'd have got fed up of the compromises and niggles they have quite quickly and would've moved on before now, so perhaps a luck escape.

Fabia vRS - strange one this, wish I'd followed my FiL's advice and bought one instead of being lured by the extra 30bhp offered by the Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI (essentially the same car in a different body). It's only now that my wife drives a Fabia vRS that I realise it's a superior car to the Ibiza in almost every way despite the power drop...

Golf GTI mk5 - I went along to a car auction while looking for a Z4. There was a Z4 going through the auction but I went with an open mind and almost bought a DSG-equipped Golf GTI. Very glad I didn't as I picked up my 54-plate Z4 for the same price at this 55-plate Golf would've cost me. Great car but no comparison.

Alfa 147 GTA, tried very hard to get one but they are either sold straight away (at the right price) or massively over-valued and stay up for sale forever. Got the Z4 instead, very pleased I did, but the GTA is still a bit special IMO.

Looked a few E30s a few years back ended up buying my Calibra instead and had many happy years motoring then prior to the Z i first looked at Supra TT and then Honda S2000 but went for the Z4 and really really happy i did :D :D

Only ever had one that I was going to buy but had to back out.....a brand new 1977 Triumph Spitfire. The insurance was double because it was a ragtop so I got a new '77 Capri 2.8l instead. Only $360 a year vs $720 for insurance on the Spitfire and I was a 4th yr apprentice at the time so it was too pricey, it would be equivalent to around $3000 a year in todays dollars. (they are very hard on unmarried males under 25 yrs old here, don't have that problem anymore... )

Golf GTI MkV - when they first came out, you could get a discount of 8%, which stopped as soon as I decided I wanted one.

Z4M roadster - why didn't I? Still wonder to this day. :headbang:

I had the Golf MKV GTI.......... it was almost too good..... too composed.... drove it from south west of France to Faro in portugal in a day... including one of the cross Pyrenees passes........ a great GT car.... but not a sports car.

M Coupe - Immaculate, imola red, drove really well but a few things didn't quite check out so didn't take the risk as it was a private sale.

Elise X - One-off Lotus test car with carbon fibre body parts and seats, light weight battery and forged alloys. Fantastic to drive. Just couldn't sort the cash quickly enough.

Yeah I know what you mean about the GTI. Still nice though. Few more...

Ford Racing Puma :sweetheart:

Focus RS (old shape one)
1994 Fiat Punto GT :driving:

RX-8. They had just come out and prices were a premium. You had to put down money and order. I'm not paying for a car I haven't driven. Local dealer had a 325Ci on the lot (Black and tan, manual) and the rest is history.

Z4M coupe-I considered it, but the $$$ and "gas guzzler tax" turned me off. "settled" for a 3.0Si. Fun! :driving:

A ford racing Puma......... remember seeing one of those at fords of winsford and being very very tempted...

Another "nearly" owner of an RX8 here. Was moments away from putting down a deposit for a Black PZ but the sheer cost of running one got to the better of me in the end.

The one car that I regret not buying when I had the the chance was a Ford Capri 2.8 Tickford Turbo - Was being sold by a mate of a mate. Tuned to 220bhp. By the time I got the money together he decided to keep it.

Few years back (actually quite a few years bacck) when I was more into older cars, after a string of older BMW's 3 series I nearly bought a Porsche 944 S2, but thankfully bought a BMW E30 M3 instead. At that time the Porsche insurance was quoted double the BMW's (£800vs 1600 for the Porsche). In hindsight I am still very glad I bought the M3, fantastic car it was.

Also nearly bought an S2000. Wasn't blown away when i drove it though. Glad I didn't as I really wanted the Z4 3.0 Si Coupe anyway and 8 months later bought the Z4 before of course then moving to the M

1.Calibra Turbo,2nd hand. ended up buying a new Bravo hlx (1998).
2.Fiat Coupe Turbo(back in 1999)
3.TVR Cerberra/too expensive for a nearly new one,and liable to be troublesome,so bought the zed.
4.VXR 220/IN 2006-2007,But hung on,and bought my 05 Z4 :D
