How would the track day organisers know you were driving one handed? Or are you referring to an experience day where they sit beside you and keep a strict reign on every element of your behaviour?lux said:
I don't purport to be a racing driver either, I merely attend track days for fun and to exploit the potential of my cars safely. I've driven dozens of cars on track over the last ten years (my own and various cars set up specifically for track use) with multiple instructors all of whom were current or former racing drivers and none have commented on my hands. Lines, braking points, going into corners too hot, yes but never any reference to my being in control of the wheel. 'End of' old chap!
Nice one, unlucky to just clip the grass otherwise you'd have been fine. Plenty of space to move about tho. I tend to just go to oulton. Had a few moments which mostly seem to be into the back chicane before you go back up to Druids
Until your in one if these and driving it for real and by that I don't mean just a passenger or for a short experience I mean on the roads and track in different conditions/surfaces/temps etc then I dont think you can appreciate the level of grip it has, I'm on a tire compound that not as good as 888s and go into corners that would make the z have a hissy fit. The only problem is the z has all the gizmos to keep you happy so you go from that to a LSD and your foot and you learn quick where and how to use the grip. Changing up or down in corners is often something you can do where you wouldn't in other cars.
The quick rack makes a huge difference. Just over 2turns lock to lock, no power, direct feel and you can see exactly where the wheels are makes for a lot of feedback. One handed driving if your running up and down a close ratio box is quite common.

I did a track day with Andy Walsh (Car Limits) in an E36 M3 a good few years back, and he sent my car into what I thought was an impossible oversteer slide which he recovered with ease with one hand on the wheel and mobile phone in the other, was mental. If anything two hands on the wheel for a 'novice' can be counter productive as your more likely to death grip the wheel which is the worst thing to do, hence his exercise of 'one finger steering'!
