Carbon Air Box. (open)

So I make carbon shiz for a living and I had to have a play....

This Prototype V1.

I'm waiting for some rubber seal to arrive so it will hopefully seal to the bonnet. Or I'll make lid.
Ignore the dodgy bit on the right as thats got a step in it for the mounting point, not decided what I'm doing there yet!

A nice weight saving too!

The bum dyno says its a good gain, mainly in response, low down grunt (under 2k, it's NA) and makes an even nicer noise now!

V2 is in the oven all ready, cut the bottom/ back corner off as this one hits the alternator and will insert a sheet in it place to run for a week or so before deciding what else needs changing.

Then I may have a look at the intake and see I can make it bigger for more air without having to mod the front panel too much.
Maybe a nice big scoop on the bonnet :poke: :?

Looks excellent. Put me down on the waitlist.

I'm just up the road from you, and I have a 3.0i that I track if you were looking for any test pilots.

Just one comment. I have a high airflow air filter on my car and I sometimes get a dashboard light for mixture preparation. Running out of options to resolve it but when I had my MOT yesterday the tester said to put the standard filter back as too much air passing across the maf might be the cause of my problem.
Also you have the insurance issue as this would count as a mod which most insurers would not be happy about .

In other news.......

finished and fitted V2 of the air box.

Doesn't really need both mounts but thought I test them and maybe take one off in a while.

A bit of squashed picture but it's now under 200grams, which is lighter than V1 and about 10th of the standard one.

Only tested for 50miles so far, but it hasn't blown up or fallen off!!

Great to see an update .

Any comment on the change in sound ??

The sound is all of the awesomeness and even better knowing that I made the bit that gives it that noise!

I think it must add at least 50hp🤣😂🤣

I found using the N52 OEM inlet hose with an open cone filter didn't produce much more noise. It might be due to the large resonation / type thing built into it I assumed. Someone in the USA was also doing carbon intake pipes, that coupled with this could be a good combo.

Are you talking about all the sound resonator gubbins?
BDS also have an in-house fabricated metal pipe that deletes the sound generator.
I assume there arn't more around because it needs need a mounting bracket for the MAF sensor to mount into, complicating things from a basic silicon pipe, to something a little more detailed.

Removing the sound generator may result in a decrease in noise?, unless the new airbox and filter have enough to compensate for the loss.
Even more for the guys who've removed the foam.

Well if that is the case then fitting it to a 2.2i or 2.5i M54 should give a good idea of the difference as they didn't have the sound generator fitted as standard.

Does it sound more like the e46 M3 CSL with it's carbon airbox? :D in that case I'd happily unplug the original sound generator as it kills the proper inline 6 sound.

I suspect the lack of revs from the M54 means you're probably looking at more of a gruff warble than a screaming, wailing thing like an S54.

The noise should come from the filter and intake hose itself, irrespective of sound generator.

Yeah, agreed. I wasn't implying the sound generator was limiting the noise. Circled is what I assumed may of restricted the noise? I'm not sure, I just know when I popped the large Simota open cone on from the GruppeM (Without the carbon surround) onto the end of the standard intake hose, I barely noticed any noise difference.
