As it says. Car won't start at all and just throws this error. I took it out my garage the other day and washed it and put it back afterwards. Any ideas before I call the dealership? :(

Look in your handbook for "Overriding selector-lever lock". In mine, it's on page 54.

In the Index, look under "Transmission" for "Lock, see Changing selector lever positions 53".

I am waiting a call back from the dealership. I have only had the car 6 weeks. Purchased from Syntner Audi in Reading. It is covered by Sytner Select Warranty.

Since you bought the car just 6 weeks ago, you don't need any type of external warranty, the dealership themselves i.e. Sytner are personally liable to fix this. Hopefully it will be a quick fix so you are not without your car for too long.

The dealer got back to me. The plan is I speak to local BMW dealership and refer them back to Audi in Reading to pick up the bill as agreed with Audi. I'm really gutted about this. I'm not sure why I bought car such as this tbh. We had a really tough year and this was a pick me up for me but it seems to have gone a bit pear-shaped now. :(

Any car can go wrong Steve, don’t let it put you off the z4. In the summer you’re going to enjoy it more than an average car

These thing happen, don’t let it get you down. Electrical gremlins on modern day cars are only going to get worse.

Just be grateful you didn’t buy a Jaguar XF, from what I’m reading they are dire regarding issues.

It is a bit of a set back - but its not as if Audi are trying to duck responsibility by the sound of it.

No no yet. They want me to have it recovered to BMW in Norwich. It looks like I will have to pay for that myself. I did ask for a techie to call me back as I wanted to talk to them about transporting the car and the nature of the problem but no one has called me yet. I’ll chase them up today but I don’t think they have many people in just now.

I think I'd be expecting them to come and collect when they drop the courtesy car off. Failing that I'd suggest they come from Audi (down south) themselves - its their problem not yours. Start asking to talk (shout) at the Dealership Principle at Audi - you've been with out a car for a number of days now!

I suppose if you've got home start on AA or RAC they might take you to Norwich.

If its BMW Norwich who've asked you to bring it in that wouldn't shock me at all - I've just started using an indie in Bury due to their crap customer service in Norwich.

i just sent Audi a 'straightener' bascially, saying they need to get it sorted and any recovery shoud be paid by them. Nice and sunny here today so good that I have booked extended leave and can go for a blast.... :x :x :x :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Car now at Coopers BMW Norwich. Had fun and games getting it out of my garage due to it beig stuck in 'park' - which was expected. Finally managed to get it into neutral using the allen key. Hopefully it won't too much of a headache to fix. Not that I will be paying for it. Audi have already said the will pay for the recovery.

The fact the adjustment's in the handbook …

indicates it's designed to be user-accessible. Quite why is a different matter.

Does this suggest it 'drifts' out of adjustment, perhaps?

I now have the report back from BMW. Gearbox mechatronix to be replaced. That comes to nearly £4k. But that is not all of it. They checked the rest of the car and I have a leaking shock absorber (MoT fail). An alloy wheel that has been welded. I guess because it had been cracked. Oh, and a number of tyres worn. I have had the car 6 weeks. For all I know I could have been driving around in a car that would have been an MoT fail from day 1. This sounds like stuff from a back street car lot not a main dealer.

Look on the bright side at least all of this should be covered by the dealership who sold you the car, once you get it back you should be able to enjoy driving it, personally I can’t wait for spring to arrive 😁

You’ve got 326 wheels, look at the amount of posts on here about cracked rims (it’s common)
It won’t fail an mot on a welded repair, although it’s only a matter of time before it cracks again.
Depends how bad the shock is, a slight mist would probably pass an mot but a proper leak trailing down the damper should be a fail (I’ve seen bmw garages exaggerate petty issues into major ones, obviously in the hope of picking up the work)
How bad were the tyres? Half worn isn’t an issue.
Your garage should pay for the gearbox repair but you may have a fight getting the other points addressed.
Good luck
