Cannot remove vent to fit Aux cable!

Well I built my own AUX in cable following the guide on the how to section. I was happy with my cable, it looks neat and I also incorporated a screening layer before wrapping it in tape.

However I then spent 2 hours trying to remove the damn central grill to get access to the stero. After 2 hours with various tools and even rigid wires I gave up as I was getting frustrated.

I have come to the conclusion that either my Z4 was built wrong, or somebody has been messing with the head unit in the past. My reasoning for this is simple. The metal tabs are not visible within the holes, in all of the guides it says to prize the tabs down, but I cannot even find the front of the tab, its like the vents have been pushed back to far so the tabs have overshot.

Watched that video and it got me even more annoyed, I have to angle my screwdriver at nearly vertical just to get into the tab location!

Anyone else had real problems with this? was hoping to get it fitted before my 3 week euro trip... but not looking promising :|

After working out which way up it needed to be plugged in, and where on the back of the unit (by feeling fir it first), I managed to squeeze my hand up through the space below the aircon controls after removing the panel. Took me about 15 minutes to find, locate and snap into place but worked for me.

youve probably done what i did

After hours of trying to get hold of the clip(s) i finally managed to get hold of them using a standard table knife. On inspection it appeared from my many hours of trying i had forced to clips higher up than their orginal position, hence the extra time it took to get enough purchase on them to pull them down so releasing the vents.

So take a deep breath and give it a go with a knife and slide it in vertical from the 2 hole vent down from the top (When one clip is loose then hold onto the vent for dear life until the other one is free)

you want to attack them at around a 50 degree angle.
if you shine a torch into the vents, you'll see a small rectangular hole in each side of the vent.
you need to get a VERY thin blade (screwdriver, tableknife, etc), in that hole, as close to the leading edge (the edge closest to you).
Once in.. move it in about 1/2 a cm and then rotate the blade so that the tip moves towards the trailing edge of the hole.

They are an ABSOLULTE NIGHTMARE and took me frickin ages.
It's damn fustrating, and you will constantly think yours are not normal - I did.
but trust me.. it is right, but they are utter buggers.

where abouts in the UK are you based - if it's not far, I don't mind coming to releive your anguish......
