My nephew has got one, he's 24 and drives fast and he has a clean licence, so apparently they work. Been in there and it does get on your nerves mind.

I answered lol

And there you go generalising and stereotyping about my political persuasions, which of course is even more helpful and enlightened.

I got a little device called a piccolo from Halfords for about 50 quid that sits under the centre armrest and gives you verbal notification of speed cameras and also has a nag mode that repeatedly tells you to slow down if you are over speed but also has a mode where it just tells you once..it has saved me a few times when in a unfamiliar area

I was arguing semantics with you, but will now retire based in your superior intellect.

I agree. A competent driver should be able to spot bright yellow speed cameras :driving:

However, what you won't spot - even with perfect vision - is a laser speed gun that is being operated by someone hiding behind a bush/sign/gantry 800 yards away :headbang:

I've only ever been caught by the latter, only in NSLs, and have had no more than 3 points on my licence at any one time

If I get a ticket then I get a ticket. No use moaning about it, or spending hours investigating loopholes to get out of it. Pay it, and move on with your life

For reference, I use the PocketGPSWorld speed camera database on my TomTom (TomTom's own one is not very good).

Just as a pointer, by UK and EU law your factory speedometer isn’t allowed to tell you that you’re going slower than you really are, but its ok to tell you that you’re going faster than you really are, so 100% to 110% is allowed!

So could be doing 30 and actually doing 33 MPH without knowing. Again tyres and pressures as already mentioned can also effect the speedo reading

aaaaaand back on topic

Tomtom have, similar to Trapster (FOC), a community supported camera network

Simple interface and a year's free subscription for your smartphone (I know there is for iOS, not sure for android)

http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/products/your-drive/smartphone-navigation/iphone/tomtom-speedcam-app-iphone/index.jsp

Trapster is another alternative, though I've found tomtom's to be much simpler and less distracting. The only downside is it will run through your data which may be an issue depending on usage

Edit: If you're after physical units, I'd be after a Pogo Alert Plus (v4 I think is the latest on the market). A few friends of mine have Road Angel Gems and seem to rate them highly but I find the unit itself to be a little too big for my liking.

This is correct.

But this is the other way around.

Your speedo could be showing 33mph and you could be doing 30mph. But, the speedo is not allowed to say you're doing 30mph when you're actually doing 33mph.

Mine's quite accurate (according to GPS) at 30-40mph, and then it starts to drift. At 85mph on the GPS the speedo is showing 88mph, and at 150mph on the GPS the speedo is showing almost 160mph - but I've got slightly taller than standard rear tyres so I'd assume the inaccuracy is about 5% normally.

Well the thread is truly hijacked. No one has had the decency to answer alastairb25 question :headbang:

that would mean your speedo was under reading which you just said was illegal for your speedo to do. so if the speedo says 30 then you may be doing 27-30 as over reading on the speedo isnt illegal according to UK/EU law. :poke: As for tyre ware and pressure well unless you have massively under or over inflated then i am afraid the speed difference would be negligible at 30mph

Satnavs either the portable or integrated into the car calculate the car’s speed by measuring actual distance travelled over time using GPS satellite tracking. They repeatedly locate your exact position on earth via satellite and calculate how far you have travelled, then divide by the time it took for you to travel that distance. Satnav accuracy is determined by satellite signal quality and is unaffected by your car’s tyres. Many satnavs are unable to account for changes in vertical direction, so may be less accurate if you are travelling up or down a steep hill. They are also inherently more accurate at higher speeds, as a larger distance over time reduces rounding errors, but a satnav will usually be much closer to a car’s true speed than the speedometer and can be plus 3 MPH out at lower speeds.

I've got a Road Angel Pro connected - great device, updates via a sim card built into the device for £5/pm. It automatically updates with all fixed, temporary (average road works) and mobile camera (vans) locations. I think the Gem they currently sell is actually a better device (tells you what your average speed has been through that section of average speed cameras etc.

I'm not going to get into the ins and outs of speeding, but when i strap this thing to the dashboard and it displays my speed in BIG numbers in front of me, I'm a lot more conscious of my speed than I would be without it. The 135i is deceptively quick, and I'd say that the detector has helped keep my speed down and other people, and my license safe.

Alastair if you want a gadget in your car then go for it. Personally i dont see the point but thats just me.

What's being against speeding got to do with being a 'liberal do-gooder'? Haven't you been banned from driving on a number of occasions for speeding IIRC? Surely you would know better than anyone that its not worth flying around to get banned! :poke:

In any case, if the guy wants a camera detector then fair enough, I've got by using my eyes for the last 11 years and have survived getting any points so far (touches wood). If your sensible and pick your time/places to drive more progressively then shouldn't have a problem, always a risk you'll get a caught out by a undercover car/random mobile camera anyway regardless of having a detector or not!

Yep back on track now. My nephew has a trapster and he swears by it, just phoned him to check.
