Calling all 2.0l Zed Owners

No complaints about performance at all as long as you do make the most of the rev range - it is a sports car after all, where's the fun in changing up at 3k rpm! :driving:

As has been said before, sure I'd love a 3.0 but i drive 25 miles a day through mostly 30-40 MPH zones, then a couple of miles blast on a national limit, dont hold back with my right foot and am currently showing 36.2 MPG over 500-odd miles, and thats with no motorway cruising at all.

So for me, the combination of great economy and enough power for 95% of the time it's a no-brainer until I get that £10k payrise that's not gonna happen any time soon

If your having to drive your 2.0L that hard to achieve the speed you want you may not saving that much in terms of fuel compared to a larger motor eg 2.5si

How hard do you guys routinely rev your engines?

only to the redline everytime I drive it  I know your not supposed to go fast from cold and all that old pony but I simply cant help it.

No-one will be buying that car then...

You mean no one here would buy it ;) I mean Its only done like 27K so its still a pretty fresh engine and besides theres no point in having it to drive around at 20mph and never get out of 3rd gear.

Its going round castle combe in 3 weeks time and is no one here interested? or maybe scared incase you crash your posh motor

I made a post about it and everything....

Hi

Had my 2.0 SE for almost three years from new and it gets regularly thrashed......mpg can be as high as average 42 if I behave and 32 if I don't.....sticks the road like glue and is plenty fast enough if you know what you're doing! :driving:

x2 :)

I love my 2.0 Zed to bits. The engine is meant to be revved so do it - not doing so will IMHO actually do harm. My other Zed is a 1978 Mad Max Kawasaki Z1000 and whoever owned the old girl before never revved her so anything over 5k (red line is just over 8k) and she ran really bad. Now after two years in my ownership with plenty of right wrist and she runs a lot better in the upper rev band. The point made about Z4s being built for German autobahns is also true - Germans do not know how to drive slowly on the motorway. On my trip to Germany, my Zed was kept between 80 and 120 mph just to keep up and I got 40mpg for the whole trip - fantastic!

The 2.0 really is fast enough for most and the handling is absolutely better than the heavy nosed 3.0. However, if you have to blast past people who have held you up doing 60 then there is nothing going to satisfy more than the grunt of more cubes. There is no doubt that the big engined cars are great - bit like the current crop of 1000cc bikes like the Blade, R1, ZX-10R, they are great too and most of my mates ride them. When they want to go fast they pull the loud lever and go. I ride a much older 750cc ZX-7R and I can keep up with them but I have to wring it by the neck to the red line - guess who is having more fun? The same can apply when comparing the 2.0 with the 3.0 Z4

If you keep thinking that you are not happy then I would trade the car and get the 3.0 - I don't think they are actually that much more expensive to run, all up.

I got my Z4 to keep a long time and in the next 10 years (yep I plan to keep her at least that long because I love the car and think it's a bit of a future classic) well, petrol will cost a lot more and the morons in Government will tax cars to hell etc etc.

So, rev it, enjoy it and if your brain keeps nagging, trade up to a 3.0L :)

Thank you all for all the very helpful and constructive comments.

I get it....the zed is a sports car and should be driven as such.

I do love the car and it handles superbly. Based on your advice, I have had lots of fun this week during my somewhat tedious commute. I've found a huge difference in performance by actually using the rev range to the full.

Good thread this :D

Personally I think in 2.0/2.2L form the Z is perilously close to the 60 times of your average sales rep in his 4 door saloon in your 2 door convertable, being deafeated by somthing such as a 3 series - not a good look 8)

As for the bigger engined Z's being nose heavy, honestly what a load of only pony, I'd gladly accept the challenge of a less powerful Z when I know handling wise I can match an evo - at road speeds of course say up to 80/90.

On a track I'd be left for dead im sure  might aswell get my excuses in early.

Oh yeah economy (like I think about that) Im averaging 28-30 as indicated by the computer, and on a more boring note yes I do reset it everytime I fill up to make sure I aint cheatin' lool  the speed one is irrelevant since your always bound to get stuck behind some p3nis who thinks 50 is fast enough.

The larger engine cars may be slightly more nose heavy, less so in the case of the newer SI n52 engine cars, but their firmer suspension and usually wider tyres more then make up for it.
As for the performance of the 2.0i I think for a 'sports car' it's pretty lacking, especially when you consider an average repmobile or compact exec such as a 320d could could comfortably match or outrun one, and if they were remppaed there'd be no comparison.

Thats what I said.....?

Oh dear - did you think I was attacking your manhood? The point is that the Z4 is a great sporst car in any form - if you really need the 3.0L then buy one but don't slag yourself off if you only have a 2.0 or take position that 2.0L owners are reps just cos you have a 3.0L.

This is a Z4 forum not a 3.0 litre forum

Well I was a fully signed up member to the '2.0 is enough for me club' and yesterday I had the roof down hammering itthe 35 miles or so home from work havin a great time....

Pulled off the motorway onto a long dual carraigway split up by a few roundabouts..... Pulled into the fast lane and there is this big Merc M 4 wheel drive thing coming up in my rearview - movin faster than it should!
So the right foot goes down but he is stilll right there. Roundabout ahad so I drop and slip through like a dream, he looses much ground here, so I floor it again ... Next thing he's coming bacck on my tail...... What the hell is happening here???

Next roundabout, same script, I'm silky smoothe and through, he looses time, but next thing he's on me and I pull over and let him past......what is going on here?????

As he passes I notice the back of his merc says 'Brabus 480 ..... Somethin'. Whew! What a releif....

Love my 2.0 Z4 !

Nothing wrong with revving the engine, but I will never and have never pushed it from cold.

I plan to keep my zed for a long time, it really is my pride and joy.... I definitely will not be revving hard when the engine is cold.

What are you on about? no seriously can you even read?

Yes the Z is a sports car i.e it should be sporty, 150bhp in a car which is fairly heavy isnt IMO but what do I know.
