Mine does this too. Exactly how kev described. It's not annoying as such just curious. Mr M thinks its turbo whine.

Hi Carol, is that the little whirring sound through the air vents?

Tim.

I wouldn't describe it as whirring, more like a hoarse whining noise. It's difficult to describe.
It's definitely coming from front middle but I'm not sure exactly where from.

Not much help, I know. Sorry.

Hi Carol, thanks for your help, is the noise you get, reasonably loud at cold start up, i.e. noticeable? from outside the car? When I open the bonnet it appears to be coming from the passenger side. If you rev the engine the whine goes up and down with the revs. If I let it idle for say 10 minutes the whine noise slowly gets quieter until its virtually gone. I'm wondering if most peeps when the car is cold they jump in, start up and drive off so probably don't notice it. You can only just about hear it from inside the car with the windows closed but outside when the car is idling it is quite noticeable and makes the Zed sound crap for want of a better word. :(

Whats clouding it for me is our American cousins on ZPost say its turbo whine and normal

The little whirring noise through the air vents that Keivin pointed out is something comepletely different and seems related to throttle imputs, i.e when driving along and you take your foot off the accelerator the whirring stops. Its never bothered me and got used to it but this other issue if bugging me, especially on a new car that isn't cheap.

Tim.

Well I can't check mine at the moment cos I haven't got it....

However, I do think we are talking about 3 noises here...

1. The noise I described. Quite rightly, it stops when you lift of the throttle.
2. The hoarse whining noise Carol has mentioned.
3. The whining noise Tim has when cold.

I think I might get 2 as well - I've noticed that when I park up and idle (so engine is warm, not sure if same when cold) there is a noise that comes and goes.

Can't test for 3 at the moment.

I think somehow we need to get recordings so everyone can hear....cos one's mans whine is another mans turbo about to blow etc. etc...

Not sure if the iPhone will pick it up, but will try next time I have my car (so don't hold your breath!).

My noise is the same as kev's, it happens when I throttle off and on.

When I take my foot off the pedal after a second or two it goes then foot back on, second or two and it comes back.
It happens all the time, doesn't matter whether engines hot or cold. Ive got used to it and just accepted it as turbo whine. It doesn't bother me to be honest.

Thanks Carol, will call the dealer in the morning, I don't want to keep going back as they have a nice new 135i M in the showroom that keeps tempting me :?

Old thread but any further news/resolution re the throttle based noise?

Mine's going in for a 'rubbing plastic' noise behind the glove box and I may as well have them investigate this as well if it's been determined its a problem rather than a 'feature'!

Also experienced a couple of random window openings! Return to car to find the drivers window half open - has happened 3 times in the six months I've had the car.

I think the concensus is the noise is normal, annoying at first but I never notice it now.

Have you tried reinitialising the windows, mine dance occasionally i.e. drop back down when closing but I find if I hold the switch up for 15 seconds or so usually cures it. They can get a bit confused as too where they should drop.

Hey guys!
What did we find out about that noise which appears when you touch the throttle and disappear second or 2 after you lift of the throttle?
My dealer sad that this is the sound of injectors and that this is normal. But I'm not sure if that is correct.
Take care!

A pronounced whine could be the start of cam chain tensioner failure..if it becomes a constant feature then it probably is...then time to fix pronto...

I have a noise on mine that is must noticeable when the engine is at idle. Doesn’t do it straight away, but gently eases in as the revs drop after the initial cold start.

Best way I can explain the noise is similar to a when a wheel bearing is starting to fail.

I have considered skipping the aux belt off and running the engine to eliminate drive belt tensioner or alternator.

To be honest I have learned to love with it as it doesn’t appear to be causing any issues, unlike the bloody roof

I had a windscreen replaced on my E89 and in doing so they displaced the rubber seal on the back of the engine bay. I noticed an increase in engine noise straight away and had a look under the bonnet. The seal was laid across the engine and anti roll bars . The seal fits between the bulkhead lip and the underside of the bonnet. Once replaced I had my old quiet car back . May be worth checking ?
