Calling all 2.0l owners - whine update

Hi all,

Really a question for the 2.0l 4 cyl owners but maybe the same across the board, but does your engine whine a bit? its like a background noise and increases with revs, it seems more noticeable when cold. A similar noise seems to be the norm on the MINI petrol engines as well as the BMW/PSA engines as I remember the Peugeot 207CC I had did the same, it was quite loud and hugely irritating when the top was down :? It sounds almost like a dry pulley bearing but unsure if its normal or a fault?

Cheers,

Tim.

Not that i have noticed mate.

I think, as it's the e89 section he might be talking about the new engines.

I have read a few other posts in this, people aren't sure what it is but does seem to be common though some notice it more than others. Could be any number of things but as always if you're concerned ask the dealer for their opinion.

Cheers Maniac, its done it since picking up a few weeks ago, I just seem too notice it more today for some reason after washing, seems to quieten down once warmed up but slightly there in the background. Will see how it goes :)

Not that I've noticed. Our last car was a MINI Cooper maybe that's why.

I did notice that a 207 we test drove and our MINI made a many of the same noises. We also test drove an F20 116i with the BMW/PSA motor and it didn't sound like a MINI.

Just do a quick google on 'z4 20i whine'. Should pick up a few results. Just the way the 4 pots are and not everyone will notice or be bothered.

Hello,

I collected my 20i on Friday there - 244 miles and counting and I must confess I have not heard any 'whine' as such, unless you mean turbo whistle? It appears to be the only constant background noise (other than some tyre roar - damned RFT's!! :D ).

It is remarkably refined for a 4 pot - and as mine is new I have been listening intently for any out of the ordinary noises. None so far to report (thankfully).

As someone mentioned, if you are at all concerned then contact the dealer.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies, I'm wandering if its turbo whine or whistle but just seemed more noticeable today at idle from cold.

Will keep an ear out over the next few days and contact the dealer if its an issue, apart for that its all :D

Wonder if its what I notice in mine.....which I thought was the sound generator thingy.

When I touch the throttle, as slight whine noise starts - sounds like one of the heater vents etc - but still does it with all fans off. When I take foot of the throttle, after a few seconds, it stops. Doesn't sound mechanical to me, and doesn't get louder with revs.

Hi Kevin,

Yes I get that too, its something related to throttle imputs as you say, mine goes as soon as you take your foot off and comes back when applied, however I noticed this morning after 20 mins or so driving it seemed too disappear :? I tend not too notice it with the radio on but it is kinda irritating :|

Regarding the other noise mine is a slight whine in the engine bay and noticed it first last Saturday whilst the Zed was idling on the drive, seems to be noticeable when cold, I'm wandering if its a duff or noisy alternator or belt pulley or a dry belt. I was out this morning and when I got home there was no noise at all once the engine had warmed up. The performance of the car is fine. I'm going to see how it fares over this week and if gets irritating will drop into the dealer.

If it gets louder when you put the car in Sport or Sport+, it is probably the sound generator.

I'm not actually sure what the sound generator is supposed to sound like? or what its supposed to replicate :?

Your cars stereo plays fake engine and exhaust noise into the cabin. Whether or not you have the hifi on.

It's not entirely known how it works precisely but the only way to test it is to pull the hifi fuse.

It's also now in the m5 ( http://m.cnet.com/news/20111031 )

What next.. Fake power?

Maybe not much help but my 30i doesn't suffer from that.
It has had a noticable timing chain noise from new that is only audible at tick over though. Its no where near as noticable as the chain noise on my XKR.
