Calling all 2.0l owners - whine update

Maybe not much help but my 30i doesn't suffer from that.
It has had a noticable timing chain noise from new that is only audible at tick over though. Its no where near as noticable as the chain noise on my XKR.

Cheers Robert

Well the Zed seems fine at the moment, just a little confused why it seemed to have a whining sound on Saturday but all seems good for now :)

That said could it be that the twin scrowl turbos make a different noise to a standard turbo and thats what you can notice? That would be more noticable on startup when the oil was cold and thick not providing much protection.

Hi Guys,

New to the forum here. I just picked up a brand new 20i Msport on Sunday 13th of May from Menzies BMW in Stirling.

I live down south now so I immediately took the car down the road and it seemed to to work like a dream. Now that I'm back in England I'm starting to drive it around town I can hear the annyoing whining noise.

Before I looked at this forum I assumed it might be something to do with the noise generator. Having looked through the threads it seems like this is a common issue. Some people talking about speakers, wheel alignment, bearings etc. For me, the noise is coming from the back end of the car. I've not had a chance to drive much with the roof down so will test it out later this evening.

I might take it to Cooper BMW in Reading for a look. I just wondered if anyone had managed to get to the bottom of the problem yet before I do?

Thanks :)

John

Mine definately isn't coming from the back of the car, its coming from the front middle of the dash, which is why I thought it was the front centre speaker.

I picked mine up this week, it has the same whining noise from middle of the dash as well. Sometimes the noise stops when coasting without foot on accelerator.

Exactly....mine stops when I take foot off, sometimes after a second or two, but it does stop.

Too be honest I havent investigated further, i.e. listening for it under the bonnet, so dont know if it is on the dash or in the engine bay.

I have this noise too and I would say it is coming from the engine bay.

I thought it might be the fuel pump or something else related to the fuel delivery system cos when I'm on the throttle (even slightly - not enough for the turbo to spool up) the sound is there. When I take my foot off the throttle to coast in gear it continues for a second then stops. The supply of fuel to the engine isnt required when coasting in gear as the momentum of the car keeps the engine turning over, so the fuel pump / noise in question stops.

Just to clarify- It's the same for me. The noise appears to be mainly when I'm using the accelerator/throttle. Not sure whether to pursue getting it sorted out or just try to ignore it! :? I would describe it as a noise like the fan on a rowing machine (not that I've heard that for a while!).

I would have thought as were all getting this little noise through the dash (vents?) then its probably normal, it doesn't seem to be anything to worry about :)

Yeah, I don't think its a problem, I just want to know what it is?

Zed went into the dealers last Wednesday and had the Wastegate Valve replaced, hasn't cured the problem and still whining :headbang:

Looks like another trip to the dealer then.

I'm really thinking its the turbo, i.e. a dry or faulty bearing which quietens once warmed up as it expands.

I do think BMW's fault finding is a bit hit-and-miss. This is all warranty work, so the garage know its not costing you, yet they must claim for labour off the warranty, so I suspect sometimes they replace stuff even if thats not the problem.

Yours only does it when cold right? I guess they changed it and tested when warm!

Yepp when cold Kevin, I left the Zed with them over night so they could diagnose the problem the next morning. They had the Zed all day last Wednesday but I'm guessing it would have taken a while to fit the part and doubt they would have worked on a hot engine so it must have been cold when they finished the job and started it up :? Still the loan cars have been a new 1er and a MINI Cooper, could do without the faffing though, I can see the dealer from the house so easy to drop the Zed in on the way to work, but would rather not have too.

Mine does this too. Exactly how kev described. It's not annoying as such just curious. Mr M thinks its turbo whine.

Hi Carol, is that the little whirring sound through the air vents?

Tim.

I don't seem to get the whining noise or just not noticing maybe. :scratchhead:

I do have a ticking that could be from the engine at certain revs (low) and when accelerating but reckon that is the down to the design of these new engines as my wife's R56 cooper S was the same. It does seem to abate when I lift so it could be the same thing?

mine whines and ticks like an annoying girlfriend....... but like most guys, i just tune it out :poke: :D

Hi Envy.....seriously? I'm just trying to establish if this whining noise is a trait or a fault. Owners are saying theirs doesn't make this noise or is a case of not noticing it. I have found some road reviews that suggests this engine does whine. I feel it's a fault on mine as it virtually goes once the engine is warmed up.

Going to call the dealer tomorrow and suggest they look at the turbo. I'm not happy if it lots of visits of pulling the engine apart trying to find the cause.

Cheers,

Tim.

I wouldn't describe it as whirring, more like a hoarse whining noise. It's difficult to describe.
It's definitely coming from front middle but I'm not sure exactly where from.

Not much help, I know. Sorry.
