buying and selling cars in a pandemic -

I need to sell a car. I've been in lock down for months trying to stay away from everybody. Suddenly people are wanting to come over and look at the car. :? Now what
I see others online offering iphone virtual viewing ? I offered that to one guy who was adamantly not okay with that.
What do you guys do ? What's safe and what's not?

It’s not really safe to share a car with a stranger, I’d want all the money in my hand though before i let them drive it.
You should wipe the interior down before & after as well, maybe you could follow them in another car? :?

I did a little more research. One site says to give them a new pair of gloves if they wish to sit in it with their N95 mask on.
Car I'm selling has less than 5k miles so there really is no need to drive it. I hope. It's as new.
Then there is the question about cash? :? Cash is dirty as hell. In china they made all the merchants send the cash in for sterilizing or replacing. A check?

It really is scary to buy and sell cars nowadays. A face mask and gloves are necessary if they want to see check it. As for the mode of payment, a bank transfer will do, but it still depends on your buyer if s/he will agree.

Yes bank transfer is the cleanest ( pun intended) The problem I'm facing is people want to SEE the car. Plenty of cars are bought and sold and never seen until they are delivered. That' how I bought my Z4 and my new Porsche. Local people are dumbasses. :headbang: I'm getting a few bids from online dealers who pay a little less but they send a truck with a check. This is a little stressful.

If it's causing issues I might be tempted to go with the dealer pick up option and settle for piece of mind over a little more money. :)

Is the car still under manufacturers warrenty?

If so then a quick look round the car for any obvious damage and condition should be all someone needs.

I could understand if it was an older car where quite frankly I wouldn't entertain buying if I didn't get to drive it to find any potential problems

I think this is the route we have decided to go. It's going to be a positive loss.

It depends on your vulnerability I suppose.
Would it not be safe to discuss/negotiate at a safe distance and then carry out a very short test drive, with both persons wearing gloves and a mask, with all windows ( and roof?) down ?
That's what I've done and have sold two Roadsters and bought a Coupe since March

How is it scary? Its no different to anything else in life. You can either sit in your house, covered in bubble wrap and isolate yourself from everything or you can go out be sensible and accept that there are risks in everything.

I'd be more scared about someone crashing my car on a test drive than catching a virus that will most likely have no affect on me.

Well, if Number5s suggestion isnt good enough, then looks like you arent going to be doing an accompanied test drive - the only step further than face masks and gloves in a very well ventilated cabin is full on gas masks!

so that leaves you with an unaccompanied test drive, or no test drive at all. I very much doubt you would find anyone willing to buy a secondhand car in a private sale without test driving it first, no matter how low the mileage. buying a brand new car and having it delivered to you is quite different, obviously as its a brand new car with only delivery miles on, and secondly it'll be fully covered by manufacturer and dealer warrantees, which you wouldnt be able to offer as a private seller.

so if you arent happy to do an accompanied test drive, arent happy to do an unaccompanied test drive, the only option left is have a dealer come pick the car up in the back of a truck, and take the hit unfortunately. but on the plus side, that should give you guaranteed quick sale with minimal hassle.

also, curiousity is getting the better of me... how did you get yourself in the situation where you're trying to sell a virtually brand new car?

Not denying there's a virus out there. But there's also cancers, meningitis etc also which are much more deadly. No one locks themselves away due to those though.

I don’t know why you bothered asking. You’ve obviously made up your mind.

Trade it in, take the financial hit and sleep easy in your bed knowing you’re safe

I bothered because I was hoping somebody would tell me a way to safely distance while accomplishing the task in Q. So far all I got for the do it suggestions is to ignore distancing... :poke:

That's okay, I think we will sell to a dealer. Thank you all.

How can you socially distance in a car ?
You're either in it or not and if having a mask, gloves and all the windows (and roof?) down isn't acceptable to you, then there isn't any more you can do, so therefore no point asking.

If the above isnt suitable, your choices are :-
a) You let them test drive it alone
b) There is no test drive at all and you offer a full x hour money back refund
Alternatively...
c) You get on you bicycle and pedal like billyo behind them for the full test drive.
d) Fit a towbar and you sit in the caravan behind during the test drive

It's not rocket science to work out your options is it ? :headbang:
