If your over 60 have no imagination and think its okay to go the shops in your slippers you get in the Jag.

We're not all like that :o

Now where are my slippers, I must go and buy a newspaper

Kryton, your Porsche 911 will be here soon, so the old fart with no taste does not apply

Phew, thank god for that

Ferrari 456GTA (2001) for £40k.

There is a guy down my road who bought a DB9 new... and it looks and sounds stunning.. by far one of my favourite car... however he hates it!

Twice he didnt fully depress the clutch when changed up gears and it blew the sycros in his gear box (or so the dealer told when he got it replaced) But his dealer has been fantastic.. always picked his car up, courtesy car etc... but they would need to be with amount of service they give their clients!

Until recently I would have said DB9 all day and all night; but am a recent convert to the rare charms of Maserati. And I think they're a little more reliable these days too. If it was my money I'd at least try one out :poke: [/quot :)

A DB9 sounds about the perfect choice for what you're after.

For similar money you could get a CL63 AMG too. Not as exotic looking but very powerful, sound like monsters and are apparently pretty good to drive too.

An old Ferraris is just not my style. Too much risk of people keying it just for the hell of it, generally delicate machinery,

DB9 manual - very rare. I believe less that 1 in a 100 came as manual and were very specialist equipment. I'd go auto in any event on this sort of car.

Sat in the Maserati last week and loved it. You need £55k for a good one and then depreciation would be a killer on it

What's stopping you going for a Bentley?

Wonderful bits of kit, well engineered and no doubt superbly reliable, but I'm not a division 2 footballer. Sorry to say it, but the image of them just doesn't do anything for me.

This is close to your budget. Only done 1000 miles too and build may be better than you expect.

...or this 911 turbo (know you said you weren't keen but maybe worth a look)

It's amazing how dated the 456 looks, hasn't aged at all well, where the DB9 still looks stunning. The Mazza looks lovey but it would have to be the spyder for me though.

I know that the Mercs are fine powerful machines, but they just don't do anything for me and tbh it's the same with the M's if you going to spend £70k on a car why wouldn't you buy a 911.

It's like DB9 is the only 2+2 GT coupe for you. Go for it.

Ferrari 550 is nice, but only has 2 seats.

Lotus look fabulous (and I'm sure drives the same way)
Def doesn't meet the 4 seat requirement ''2+0 configuration gives you a useful rear parcel shelf''. Bit over budget, will depreciate like a Citroen and I've seen one at close quarters and it's not in the same league as say the 911 for quality.
On my own I could probably enjoy one, but MrsCJ won't sanction a Lotus, 'cos she knows me too well

It's hard to think of a car to compete that would suit you more, I think it has to be the DB9
I'll be round to have a drool at it if my plans soon come off...

You could go old school and save some cash, get a mint 850 csi

The only other cars I'd look at in the range (not that I really can) would be something like the GTR, TT-RS or a 911, none of which I think you'd want. I'd not even go for the GTR myself, I appreciate the Japanese stuff but there's no lust there.

If they were cheaper, a SL63 AMG would be worth a look, but only the two seats. My boss loves his and has had plenty of cars to compare it to.

Herminator - I love the big 'ol 850's but I'm not looking for an old classic, perhaps a new potential classic.

Right you and others have convinced me to hunt down a couple of big Mercs to take a look at. Love the knowledge that enthusiasts forums have

As always with me on hold for a few days though as I have to get to the City tonight, then Paris for a couple of days work (gotta pay for these toys somehow)

Think I might be able to detour to a few dealers en-route to Heathrow though :)

Gotta laugh at this thread... lots of good advice and opinions but I can't help laughing at:

Well we wore him down so that he's at least looking at them. :poke:

I can see why they're not top of his list, but it seems they are the safe choice for a lot of people. Especially since the Astons reputation for reliability isn't great :(

Maserati sounds and looks amazing, if I was lucky enough to be in your position that would have to be the v8 powered 4 seater of choice. Whatever you get is going to be fun but the special looks of the maser gt and the comparative rarity against the amv8 (in London at least) makes it a winner!

That's a touch unfair I feel, since the Ferrari was a launched in 1993 and the DB9 in 2004. 11 years is a long time in car styling terms and of course the DB9 is still a current model.

I actually think that the 456 has aged really well, small wheels aside. It's still clearly a Ferrari and instantly recognisable as such.
