Bump :(

Had a small bump yesterday :(

Misjudged the gap getting on to my own drive  I'm now in two minds whether to just put it through insurance or get it sorted myself - probably come down to cost etc. Picture of the damage below - what do people think?

Why do we do these things :headbang:

Bumper is not an issue, some form of smart repair will sort that.

The wing dent "may" be repairable by a good dent man, that said the fact there is paint missing may be a concern but the said smart repair may be able to rectify that.

I'd seriously consider a dent/smart repair for such a small area- Get a quote theyre free and atleast then you'll know.

Bodyshop will be £100s, probably 5 or so.

OOh gannet - not good. The front of our Zeds re so vulnerable with the sheer bonnet length and shape.

Repairs are of course so difficult to judge from a photo. The dent on the wing is in such a prominent that fill/repair could be tough

I doubt there is anything damaged beyond the bumper cover and wing.

Best guess is £200 to respray the bumper and IMHO a new wing at say £450 plus spray at £200 and fitting of everything say £200, so I bet it's in the region of £800-£1000 for a proper job. Time for a few quotes to see what the best route between smart repairs, accident repair and then pay or insurance.

Thanks for all the comments guys & gals :D

most of the white is the paint from the van I hit  such a beat up old thing the driver wasn't worried about another little dent!

Think I'm just gonna put it through insurance and save the hassle - excess is only £250 and I'd rather get it done properly as I don't think the wing can be filled properly - especially as it is in such a prime position!

argh - so annoying :headbang:

:(

Gutting.

I rekon for £500 you could get a new wing and spray over that area/buff up the bumper... and maybe even extend that to do some stone chips etc for not much more.

If your policy will be £250 more over the next few years + your excess of £250, + a claim on file, and maybe not using the repairer you want, then it's maybe better to DIY.

I know this example the car is worth much less, but my partner dented her tailgate on a Ford Cougar. Ford quoted £1000, and bodyshop was £500+, and I bought a tailgate on Ebay delivered for £130, in the right colour.
I know Z4 wings are not very common, but the car won't blow up or not work with that damage... maybe worth waiting for a wing that colour to come up at a breakers!? (as much as people say they never match, in my experience they tend to, and it's bodyshops that say they don't match :D )

Is the Dent Wizard kind of repair available on your side of the pond? I've seen them do wonders and no fill involved.

Breaks your heart doesn't it?

To reiterate as Smoky and myself point out, get a dent man in first then gauge if a bodyshop is required.

Youd be surpriosed what a decent dent man can to things like that.

Yep. Hubby had a dent in the door of his F150 from some idiot child hitting a golf ball in the parking lot. Dent Wizard popped it back out, no repainting necessary. There will probably be some retouching in this case, though. Definitely worth looking into.

My first stop would be my dent man. I've see him take out worse.

Though one thing I've found is that not all dent men are equal, so try to find one that comes highly recommended.

I have phoned the insurance company - but I have also just arranged for ChipsAway to come and take a look tomorrow...

There are also a few bodyshops on the industrial estate where I work...

I'll let you all know what the outcome is :D

Thanks for all the thoughts etc

Here in the states, a new fender is $265.00. It is only held on with nine bolts. Not sure how much painting the fender will be.

Ouch! It's one of the worst feelings when you damage the car and have no one else to blame but yourself.. I think a good dent man/bodyshop would sort that for £3-£400 but if you take it to a dealer they'll want to fit a new wing and probably a new front bumper

Well chipsaway have just been and he said he could improve it by up to about 85% because of the crease over the wheel arch :(

There is also a kink in the wheel arch which I hadn't noticed

His recommendation would be for a new wing, spray and blend etc... and therefore up to a £1000 of work. Insurance it is then I think :o

Well - hate to say 'told you so', but, 'told you so' ... Given the position of the damage I had serious reservations that a smart fix could get it to perfection. Anyway just how good is 85% improvement and you'd never realy be happy that it was not perfect??

Before you decide to get the insurance to pay it's worth asking if you lose any NCD as the calculation over the next 2 to 3 years can cost way more thn biting the bullet and just getting the work done and paid for. You may want to ask the price fro direct payment to. It's a lot less than that quoted for an insurance job.

Exactly. Just get a good wing and a good trusted well recommended bodyshop to do the work.

I rekon you'll get it done for £600 > £900 if you extend the coverage to tidy up other bits you might want doing maybe!?

I'd not use insurance.

Claim on file, £250 excess disappears into the nether, + increased costs for next 3 years on policy.

I'd only use insurance when it really was going to be cheaper in the long run. Using it when it will be more expensive in the long run and leaving you having to declare it for 3-5 years into the future, and give details etc etc (when getting new insurance for example) is just a nightmare...

If you wait a month or so a wing might turn up in that colour and just swap it over. Job done and cheap as chips!

I too had my doubts about a smart repair - but it was worth checking out :)

The guy actually said I wouldn't be happy with 85% and he is right - I wouldn't.

I hear you on the insurance, though I will not lose any NCD as it is protected - I realise that that wont stop the premium going up and that I will pay slightly more next year(s) because of the claim. Guess it comes down to how much money I have lying around at the mo - not much on top of a conservatory just ordered...

Could I live with seeing the damage for a month or so on my pride & joy in the off chance of a new wing and bumper coming up in the right colour - that's a tough one :o

Thanks for all the input thus far

I waited for 12 months once, and one never came up :tumbleweed:

Probably not the best idea. Just you know what insurers are like, I can see the claim management will add another £250, then they might put pressure on for their approved repairer if your quotes look high or other annoyances.

Either way, I'm sure you will do what is best by you, and good luck with getting it fixed whichever you do :D
