Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

MOT Failure for me today with broken rear nearside.
I thought the handling had gone off a bit, and was not surprised when the problem was found.
New ones go on next week, and hopefully handling will nevr have felt as good. :D

Make sure they fit the right ones for your model and M sport suspension.

I am getting it done at TWG in Peterborough, and have asked them to confirm that they are going to fit the Sports Springs - as original. :)

My car had its inspection 1 last friday... broken OSR coil.... under 4 years and covered 18K miles!

Lucky i had an extended warranty... But now they have been replaced will get some eibach's fitted :D

Asked the dealer if its a common problem... and he was very frank and said their parts department is like a mattress store... especially for the X3 and 3 series.

Well back in Aug when i painted my calipers this is the sight i see:

After less then a year... The dealer said both rears were swapped, so either they didnt swap both or this broke within a year under 4K miles :o

Swapped to Eibachs now.

Elite Auto in Peterborough fitted new 'Suplex' rear coil springs to my car, free of charge, a few weeks ago after incorrectly fitting the wrong springs over a year ago for the previous owner.

Sports springs have three patches of either green or grey painted on halfway down the spring.

Popped my broken spring cherry today - been waiting for it to happen for the last two years - £280 to replace both with BMW ones or £160 to replace with OEM equivalent qaulity or £140 for cheapest.

Car is under 4 years old, 39k miles. Going to talk to my dealer about goodwill before going ahead with replacements.

Final outcome was a cost of £96 to me (BMW/stratstone made a contribution).

This week I heard a strange noise from the rear...my thought was the broken rear spring. And it was correct! Going to fit Eibach springs or spend some more money on Bilstein pss10.
My Z4M is 6 years old and has 80.000km

Hi, everyone. new owner of a z4 2006 2.5 si black fully loaded with 62000 miles. just wanted to add myself to the list of members with broken springs!!! off side rear...making the inner edge of rear tyres a little thin.

Haha .well spotted Woody ! another one climbing over the fence in the dark :D
C,mon neeler . let's see some pics

Well i suspected i had one & i was right , the slight noise only came after i had jacked the car to replace the alloys .
Seems jacking the car then letting it down had broken the "pigtail" on the bottom of the spring .
So beware folks when doing similar ! go gentle

Only just joined up but couldn't help but notice this thread. I didn't know that this was such a widespread problem. My offside rear had broken and caused an MoT failure at it's first test, but was replaced under warranty. No problems since, however, although up till the spring broke I had covered 49,000 miles and have only covered 8,000 since.

X2 want to see if its my old car.

As Im stuck in London Away from usual mech, I tried kwikfit for a quote...£210 for one spring!! Phoned main dealer in town, £174 lol chuffing kwik fit, no wonder I had not used them for 20 yrs!!

Gonna add myself to the list now too.

Got a 55 plate 3.0i SE with 79k and rounding a corner near where I live I hit a pothole and heard the dreaded ping. (Will put in a claim but wont hold my breath)

Going to get both rears changed and I don't want to go for the OEM option nor do I want to lower the car any further with aftermarket performance springs as it already has the M-Tec set up which is low enough. What standard size aftermarket springs have other members recently changed to (as the start of this thread is really old) in order to get away from the OEM rubbish?

Euro Carparts sell Sachs coil springs for around £60 per side but the description states "For vehicles without M-Technics" so not sure if that excludes my car or are they specifically talking about Z4M's? GFS Car Parts also have springs listed for £55.80 but they don't mention the brand name at all and under the description, they are just described as "Quality - Premium".

Anyone had any experience with any of the above brands?

MOT's due next month so need to get this done asap therefore any advise will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Billy

Mine went last week. Went to a friends over at least 12 speed kill humps. Stood outside talking 5 minutes after I pulled up and heard a spring go pop. When I checked in the day light, found both snapped?
