Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

Should have sent them a link to this thread.....might wake the dozy twerps up a bit! Hardly good PR for them is it.

I did & it made no difference!

This was my reply to them

I won't be replacing the springs with the poor quality BMW springs fitted to the Z4M thanks. I can get some better-made springs for less than that.

I take it you didn't see the 100's of others on the forum with the same problem then?

I will let the forum members know that BMW still won't accept the springs made for the Z4 & M are not up to the job.

I guess after 10 new BMW's it's time to change. No sign of a 'proper' Z4M on the cards anyway.

I take it they never answered your reply, lol
Yeah, its an ongoing problem..thats why ,after 2 snapping in the past 2-3yrs,i will probably be going down the Eibachs route.
As someone else said though, its not just BMW z4's that seem to have this issue, slk's too..and my mates boxster when he owned a 2yr old one a few yrs ago(which porsche didnt want to know about either)....and funnily enough, his boxster also had 18" porsche(bbs made) split-rim alloys, that were badly corroded(as bmw 108's) when he bought it,and had to be fully refurbed(by porsche and an indy wheel spclst)twice in 4yrs!!!

So we are not alone, seems 20-45k sportscars just arent expensive enough to expect less recurring problems, lol. :P

Replacement but had to pay postage which was not so good. Luckily the rears are very easy to replace.

Got mines checked today as I could hear a metal clanging noise. Rear drivers side spring is broken. £120 + vat fitted at a Glasgow BMW specialist (not dealer) car has done 41,000

Futher update from BMW about the springs.

I had one more go at them & got this more detailed reply

I acknowledge that you have carried out some research on the Internet and while this can be a useful tool, it does not always give a reliable representation of a possible situation. We collate failure reports, customer feedback and part order details, which is a more reliable source of information, to determine if an issue is common. We monitor the performance of all components used in our range and where there is an established trend of failure in any of these, we take the appropriate action in the form of either a quality enhancement or a vehicle recall. I can confirm that the issue that you refer to has not been highlighted as being inherent within our range.

It is disappointing that you are unhappy with the quality of BMW Springs and propose to use an alternative component and supplier, however, I can confirm that BMW ensure all our vehicles are constructed to the highest build quality tolerances, utilising the best quality materials and leading edge technology. I have noted all your comments on our system, which will be used as part of our ongoing product auditing programme. Should you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

So I did....

Q: Perhaps you could let me know how many claims BMW have had for broken springs on Z4's. If it really is low I can put the record straight on the forums. Although, if you look at the comments on the forum I will be surprised. I have had 2 X Z4Ms with broken springs myself.

BMW A: I am sorry that I am unable to give you exact numbers of BMW Z4 Ms that have received repairs for their springs. These figures are collated by Germany from all Z4's driven worldwide. I can only confirm that BMW Germany do not recognise this as a common issue.

I am sorry that you have experienced this issue with two of your vehicles. I assure you that this is not what BMW aspire to as a company. I have ensured that your comments have been logged and forwarded to our product development team.

I appreciate the research you have carried out on the internet has given you reason for concern, whilst this can be a useful tool, it does not always give a true representation of the facts. The percentage of repairs is minor compared to the 200,000 Z4's sold all over the world.

:x Iv just been and had Wheel spacers fitted (i know easy job but it was free fitting)
My Z4 is a 2007 and has done 35000miles, the MOT is in 2 weeks

Does anyone know: My car is a 2.0i M Sport, will this have different springs to the regular 2.0i ?? :?

Both rear springs failed at ~17500 miles, 4 years old. Dealer arranged BMW contribution leaving me with £117 to pay for them.

57000 miles! Right rear offside gone on mine, only noticed as I was cleaning the wheels and prep for MOT, £67 euro carparts 30 min job :)

Had the driver's side spring go on mine to at 30,780 miles (07 plate coupe si sport) and had only had the car 1 day!
Picked up the car from the dealer a few weeks ago on a Saturday and noticed on Monday morning the car wasn't level :o
So back to the dealers, they were really good and replaced both springs, even though it was a non franchise dealer and also replaced the rear disks and pads while they were there... :)
I think they were embarrassed by such a fundimental fault on a low mileage car and I tend to agree with them, perhaps if BMW has not been so obsessed with run-flats, this wouldn't be such an issue?

Using the advise on this very helpful forum, I had them MOT, service and check the car before I bought it. They found the OSR cracked and replaced it free of charge :D. If it goes during my ownership I shall buy eibachs :)

Afraid I've got to be added to the list for the second time. This time the near side rear. 2007 3.0Si Coupe 40800miles. Offside was replaced in Feb under good will, BMW now replacing this one under good will as well (after a little gentle persuasion).

If it happens again I'm going the Eibach route!!

Wow, Free? Do you have any warrantee left on the car?

Hi
Only had my Zed for a few weeks and my first major bill was for two rear springs which had failed its MOT, however it was a quick fix and i'm now road legal again.
