Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

That's crazy price, I was lucky in that I had mine replaced under warranty. Can't imagine it's a specialist job, why not look to buy the springs yourself and get an independent or kwik-fit to swap them out. If mine had not been covered by warranty I would have considered lowering the the car with a set of Eibach's, think their only £160 for four.

yeh im on the same line of thinking - although will stick with the OEM's

***UPDATE - just spoke to nationwide autocenter and they will do the lot for £300 (£100+ cheaper than BMW)- I need the car on the road asap so going with them tomorrow

NSR replaced last week on my Z4MC - discovered when the car was at the dealers getting an o2 sensor replaced
Following on from this and my observation that the car no longer sat level, they've since replaced both rear springs (again) and fitted new rear shocks too.

Damn - guess what I found today?

Guess I'll be calling the garage where I bought it tomorrow - luckily it's still inside their 3 month warranty.

15 Mar and all fixed. :D

hi all i just got my z4 3 weeks ago 2.0 i se when the bmw dealer did the pre delivery checks they found some rust on the lower party of the spring this is after i had the test drive and told them that the back felt a "bit soft"(ps i build cars for a japanese motor company)the springs were replaced both sides on a bmw warranty so fell lucky but they will know all about it it is called an ELF early life failure, to me looks like the spring is sitting inside a pot where water could gather or the spring is weaker at a lower point hope this can help keep at them bmw dealers

Hi there, im new to this forum, I actually found the forum whilst googling "broken rear z4 springs" as i yesterday i had one replaced under warranty (warranty company wouldnt change both unfortunately which is irritating) and i thought it was a bit unusual at such a low mileage even with rft's and Leeds's 3rd world roads.

So here's a +1 at 23,900 miles 2006 (n52) 2.5i

Repair work was carried out by Halfords autocentres (previously Nationwide Autocentres) as they are the "approved" repairer for my warranty company. They wanted £178 to change the other spring! A bit excessive i think as the BMW specialist who spotted the broken pring whilst carrying out inspection 1 only quoted £78 for the spring and £25 labour (plus vat).

Picture the scene yesterday. I am at N.Oxford BMW (Car in for Inspection II Service)
I am about to pay Service cost when I am told the (additional) cost of replacing NSR Spring = £200 + VAT. Made me nearly drop my free Latte!
Anyway a coronary was averted when they explained this was covered by the BMW Warranty - phew.
Note: Mileage is 43k. And as far as I am aware this is the first spring breakage.

Q. How long do these things last? And should they be replaced in pairs?

Cheers.

Arggghhhhh

Heard a crack and a clatter and saw something bouncing along the road.

I pulled over and this is what I found.

Usual story unfortunately

They all seem to brake in the same place. Not sure if it was on this topic or not but someone suggested that it was the seat that the spring sits in was the likely culpret as it allows the collection of water around the spring and thus lead to rust

When painting my calipers today i noticed a broken spring exactly as picture sitting on the arm must have broken before i got it looking at the rust and BMW MOT'd her as well :o
Nearside but i have'nt noticed the car sitting lower but the car creaks a bit that side so maybe thats it.
It's going back monday anyway for a missfire so they can sort that too :D

I suspected I had a problem with the rear offside spring when I could hear a rattle. Took wheel off last night, and sure enough the spring had snapped. Just come up to 20k miles, MOT dur next week. Judging by the amount of posts on here this is a pretty common problem.

This is very annoying. Will be calling local BMW today to get their take on it.

Cha. LE 90109 - Broken rear spring found at 25.000 mile service. No warranty cover. NOT good enough!

Went to BMW Oxford to have my transport mode problem sorted.

A nice little note told me my battery was "unserviceable", my fog lights had condensation in them and BOTH rear springs were busted. £320 to replace them? I think not.

Yup..me too!

Back offside spring broken at the base.

I managed to buy a pair from a factor total £120.00inc VAT, fitting looks very straight forward.

The car is a Z4 2003 2.5

just done rear brakes on my z4 and the o/s rear spring is broken, approx 2" from the end of the bottom coil.
they look like very recent springs too, no rust at all, going to replace both next week. :driving:

Forgot to add; 2006 2.0 owned since new with 37k miles.

MARCUSF; too late now but that sounds a bit pricey for two run-of-the-mill (probably pattern) replacements.....you can get a complete set of four Eibachs for not much more than that?

yep me two both rear,20000 miles, bought updated ones more chunky euro parts frend fitted £40 job think about £140 parts.
2004 2.2
