Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

Interesting thread!

My RHD coil spring broke in December 2008 my left coil spring has now done the same. Car details below:

2003 Z4 3.0L
26000miles

What do you plan to do? Has anyone expressed their dissappointment to BMW. I work for Jaguar, I know all manufacturers do long durability tests, curb strikes etc., and all suspension and body components bar consumable should last well into 100000 miles and 10 years. Something isn't right - BMW are one of the good manufacturers after all. Still love the car though!!!!

You can add me to the list also.
March 2007 07 Reg
17k Miles
Drivers side.

I had a feeling it had gone but had no strange noises, it just sat a little low and after getting 2 new tyres today confirmed it was broken. Went to sytner and it's gettin repaired Tuesday under warranty.

Two more confirmed broken today during MOT.
2003 3.0i
Both rears.

No noise, clunks, etc.
Will in due course photograph them when I know where they broke, but assume very top end of final coil

Bummer!
Any point going to the local dealer (cooper Reading) and showing them a printout of this thread? Will they say "get the hell out of here" or will they say "looks like a real issue - we'll replace it free of charge"

Updated

We have listed over 85 members cars that have had one or both springs break, surely BMW know about this design fault as i belive the issue was also present on the 3 series too.

I have a feeling that BMW will just put this down to wear and tear.

k3ab, print this topic and take it in just to see what the service manager says.

i wonder if its a bigger problem in countries with crap roads - like the uk for example. id imagine the germans have less broken springs perhaps??

between big pot holes and big puddles of water by the road my poor zed has been all over the shop today.

i dont think i added mine on this thred but 2003 2.5i all four springs replaced by last owner at 72k miles. i cant remember which had actually gone, rear at a guess.

Add my name heard a loud crack when i got into the car today NSR gone ordered two new rear springs :(

2004 3.0SE 19K

Add me too!

Both rear springs snapped.

2003 3.0 with 38,000 tho mechanic reckons they have been gone for a while. Decided to avoid OEM now sitting on Eiback pros.

...and me! Started hearing a metallic clanking sound on uneven roads and thought it might be an exhaust hanger. Local KwikFit guy - bless him - found one wheel arch measured 1cm lower, reached in behind and pulled out the broken piece. No charge.

Vines Gatwick replaced the broken spring with BMW taking the cost. No quibble and work carried out same day.

Hi guys, I'm a new member.

This happened to me too when I was driving in Germany. Happened in Dec 08. Rear right spring broke and flew across the road after hitting the underside of my car.

Z4 3.0i 2003

Me too. After the bad winter here in the Midlands the pot holes were bigger than usual and the drivers side rear fractured on my (then) 55 2.2 roadster :o . I had both replaced but was out of warranty - can't remember how much, it was but I think around £300. I bought a 07 3.0 coupe a month ago and.... had a drivers side rear spring go yesterday :x - car is in to BMW on Monday and hopefully the warranty will cover this and they won't argue its "wear and tear".

This is clearly a major problem with over 100 posts on here - has anyone approached BMW head office? I had a TT before the Z4 which was well out of warranty when my dashpod started playing up. This is a common fault on TT's and was featured on Watchdog which may explain why after very little pressure Audi agreed to pay the £800 for the dashpod replacement, out of warranty. I certainly think if this is a common issue on the Z4 BMW should think about doing the decent thing and replacing when out of warranty - and indeed should seriously look at replacing with new springs that don't suffer from the corrosion which is clealry the root of the problem....

Interestingly the BMW dealership I bought the car from called me yesterday to try to sell me gap insurance on the finance - and were clearly not at all interested in the fact that the car they'd just sold me had broken..... :headbang:

It's still a fantastic car though, and goes like stink....!

How long do most people find the springs take to settle been for a run this morning after fitting new springs on Thursday but still sitting a little high for my liking :(

2005 2.0i SE Roadster '55 plate
40,000 miles
o/side spring broken.
Replaced both.
Covered under 5 star AA warranty. £240 job.

I've got a feeling they've gone on mine too. Heard the dreaded metal clanging noise today on the way to work, but it had gone on the way home. Is it easy to check?

Wow... I've never heard of this before. I'm 50k miles in a 2003... autoXing for the past 5 years... no problem here but something to stay aware of.

Mine went in my old roadster around 40k, and BMW confirmed yesterday I need new springs in the coupe at 27k.

Me too

3.0 2004 04 UK

Both springs gone, 44k miles but mechanic says broken for a while, probably before I got it at 34k Feb 08.

2001 330D saloon had the rear springs go too - common fault on many BMWs I'm informed - easy money by the sound of it.

Dealer had them in stock (unusal stock item given the number of apparent variants) suggesting common fault is acknowledged?

Paid £149 for the pair I think.

Me too!! One of my springs on my MR was replaced by the BMW dealer before I could collect it at the weekend. It took 4 weeks to be delivered and fitted due to a supply problem in the UK :x
