I'm have some problems with my BT broadband and would welcome opinions

I have the infinity package which promises up to 40mb, I'm out in the sticks a bit in a small village but we have an exchange about a mile away and our nearest cabinet is within 500m

the speed into the house is a steady 38-39mb, using ookla and BT wholesale tests

during the day the speed from our router to devices is close to the speed to the house (90% plus), it make some but not much difference how many devices and wired or wireless

by 5.00pm the speed from the router drops to under 10 mb steadily falling to under 2 mb by 8.00pm (usually checked using BT speed checker on wired ethernet PC)

I've had an engineer(!) out who has tested my line and found no fault (told them the line wasn't faulty)

They;ve 'fiddled' remotely with my router setting on at least 4 occasions

they claim to have reset the line twice and reconfigured my connection to the exchange at least once.
I think BT are strangling my throughput but they deny it

I'm expecting my 12th call with them tonight, so any ammunition is welcome.

thanks

more people are coming home and using the tinterweb. It's called "Over utilization'.

You may be close to the source, but others are users.

Imagine a water pipe, you're on your own so get high pressure, then others come home for a shower, now you need to share it.

It's life - unless you are on cable

At peak times the internet speeds can be throttled by BT. If its Peer 2 Peer then BT does limit this at certain times of the day depending on what type media you are downloadingand of from where. BBC Iplayer downloads are never capped, but torrents are regarded as not "time-essential".

You can also check if you are being throttled by carrying out a Glasnost test http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/bttest.php

or try this and moan and shout at BT! :headbang:

I'm lucky, I live in a town with cable so have never had an issue - except I only get 20M on WiFi!

I recently upgraded from the standard bt broadband to infinity and I can see no improvement whatsoever in the speed or wifi connectivity. It's all smoke and mirrors! :)

I think BB Providers also generally allow Speedtest.net or other similar sites full uncapped rates.
So even if they are putting you down to 10mb, your Speedtest may show it back up at 40 because it's unblocked.

Real pain. I ditched BT a long time ago. Everyone has their hater companies though I guess.

Sorry to hear its a pain for you

one of the questions is how does your BT broadband reach you?

under-ground, or over-ground?

under-ground to your house will be still copper, so AFAIK Infinity will rely on closeness of your digital station, and the digital exchange.

over-head = no chance. 5Mb if you're lucky

I've got infinity and I have noticed over the past few weeks that it's getting really shite. Even at 2.30 this afternoon Oopla was saying just over a Meg ! The other night it was the same, so at about 11pm I switched all the power off on the NTE and router, waited 2mins and switched it back on. Once connected it was immediately back up at 38 meg. It's a right PITA and I can only assume they're throttling my speed. Thing is, everyone has everything attached to their broadband now, so 'unfair use' limits would be higher you'd think....

Overhead - emperors clothes! :!:

Well that was another waste of time

Down below 2mb now so I may as well go out in the garden and shout this to you good folk out there

BT acknowledge there's a problem, it started on Monday (no it didn't ive had the problem since December 13th at least) and they've a team working on the exchange now (no they haven't, it's only a mile down the road and all the lights are out).

I can buy my way out of the contract for £340 and they've never heard of the concept of strangling, limiting throughput or limiting speed in any way. Oh and they've no. Recall of the watchdog case where they promised to solve problems within a reasonable time or allow customers to be free of their obligations

Harrumphhhh.
