broad band issues

Might be a REINS issue

interesting update - had no idea BT have an online community like this one

logged in and found literally hundreds of cases similar to mine, there are at least 8 current topics with the same problem and several responses from users with my area code

not sure what I'm going to achieve with this and I know I'm spending more time on it than I should but I'm a bit of a terrier, not very big but I'll never back down when I'm right ! (gets me into trouble sometimes!)

thanks for the suggestions above folk

and my recommendation.....

DON"T USE BT INFINITY

Don't think that's very fair as I have had no issues at all with my BT Infinity, I get good speeds and no latency and I'm sure the majority of customers have the same experience

Just remember there is Cable, and then, AFAIK, everyone else.

BT, TalkTalk, Sky, PlusNet, Tesco, etc., all use the BT network, so you need to be very careful to do a line speed check before committing as not all areas are fibred for Infinity.

If you are in a [fibre] cable area then go for that, otherwise you need to check how much copper cable there is between you and the nearest fibre.

Also [if you can] you need to find out how may other users there will be on your 'pipe' as more users = less bandwidth for you = lower speed - it happens on cable as well :(

[I pay for 50M cable, at the moment (to a local server) my ping=32ms, Download=49.2Mbps, Upload=3.08Mbps is which is fine, but once the students wake up  it will drop]

of course all these figures are subjective, it depends on what you use the internet for, and from where, for instance latest figures for me from the US are 96 / 51.98 / 3.13 - it depends not only your 'pipe' but everyone elses :?

Confusing isn't it? :poke:

As I understand it, its not all beer and skittles on cable as (and I'm prepared to be put right here) the topography is based on Token Ring and the more users connected can seriously affect your speed

Token Ring? on WAN? I think not, (but I also am prepared to be put right here  )

Well thanks you some of the info above I think I may have rattled a few cages! I' had 3 calls yesterday 2 actually from the UK all promising a resolution by Tuesday and the offer of generous compensation for my 'outages' and inconvenience. Now while this is not what I'm seeking its the right sort of noises I'm hearing finally.

As to fairness, I would not recommend BT to anyone local based on my recent experience. I think I've been treated very shoddily and the service has fallen well below the standard I would expect of a flagship product from a large multinational company.

Thanks for you help folks

Had a great 60 mile top down blast in the Z yesterday to blow all frustration away and its 120 miles today in my old mini!

Cheers

To give you some ammo get hold of some software called ping plotter
http://www.pingplotter.com/

We used to use it in network diagnostics and you could leave it running and I think you can save the results to a file. It also resolves ip addresses so you can type an address like http://www.bt.com in or http://www.bbc.co.uk or http://www.cisco.com and it will continously ping it..just a thought

30 day trial available, its so good that BT paid for the licences for us and was a standard tool for us

Back home after 140 miles in the bone shaker mini, froze to bits on top of the orm and the prom at Llandudno but worth it to see 150 classic minis giving it the works

Now back to this, you wouldn't be suggesting that I do a modern equivalent of the good old 'fax attack'?

But I think I'll, try the ping thing with BT anyway

Cheers again gents

I live on a relatively modern housing estate & was waiting for my local cabinet to be upgraded to FTTC so that I could have BT infinity, the date went from available by Mar 14, then Sep 14, then no projected date.

Being ex-BT myself I do have some residual loyaly to the company but couldnt wait for a faster connection any longer & when a Virgin Media door-knocker called one evening I managed to strike a deal for 100mbs broadband that I was very happy with.

.....to my point, whilst I usually exceed my 100mbs download speeds on VM there are times during peak periods when it drops to <25% of what I pay for, also VM's upload speeds are pretty slow compared to BT & it's derived 'fibre' broadbands.
