Brake upgrade, on the cheap...

Nice. I'm on the hunt for the front upgrade - sensing the back isn't worth the hassle though?

It's not a huge difference changing the fronts, only reason I done mine were for the track. On the road you can't tell any difference apart from a emergency stop IMO

I would expect the pedal to actually require less effort from normal speeds, due to the combination of a larger piston bore, more friction/pad contact area and also the fact that the larger diameter increases the braking force, as in the further away from the centreline that the pads are, the more leverage. More leverage = more stopping power. I am certainly expecting better performance from the upgrade, both in normal use, and erm, hard use...

I just want the bigger look :-)

You're only moving the caliper out 12.5mm from the centre.

They do look better thou

ahhhh thats who i got them off, Yorkie :D i dont suppose you have the carriers still do you?

It's still a 10% increase, so theoretically, the braking torque should also increase by 10%..

Has anyone tried these covers?

Might give them a go, for £7 a set...

Typically, I've just ordered 2 cans of blue caliper paint, after painting my current ones red a couple of days ago...

The braking performance is significantly improved in my experience.

Covers ...LMAO ...would never have them. Even the reduction in cooling would be cause enough, let alone being laughed off the road..

They're in the same league as stick on 'alloy' filler caps.

If you've got boring brakes just don't bother drawing attention to them.

my bad

As above mate, the pins are the same. I never received any pins when I got them.

ahhh ok fair enough :D as said before i havnt got around to sorting them yet as was waiting for the wheels to be fitted. thanks again and hopefully get them sorted soon

Ok. So after painting them, I fitted them today. 45 mins or so and done.

They were a straight swap, no bending of the rear shield required.

New ones

Went for a run, braking effort much better for same pedal effort, so much so that I nearly went through the windscreen on first use!

Stand up to 3 successive emergency stops from 80mph with zero fade, the old ones managed 2 stops before smoking and fade set in..

Very happy with both the looks and the performance. Great value upgrade and I recommend it to anyone who thinks the std 3.0 setup is lacking.

I have a 2,5 with vented 286mm fronts and solid 280mm rear. As a cheap solution for now I am thinking of changing the fronts to 325mm with used calipers and carriers from a 330 e46.

Does it matter that the rears will remain the same? Will it f@ck up my braking balance?

Can't see a problem, but you are effectively "jumping" 2 sizes, so the rear could possibly feel a little light if it's trying to "overtake" the front so to speak. Mine is fine, as I've gone from std 3.0 discs of 300mm to 3.0si size of 325mm. Why not just go up one size to 300mm? I've found a big difference going up 25mm, so no reason you won't by going up a similar percentage in diameter and friction area.

I now have a set of good used calipers, brackets and discs with 1 week old Mintex pads in them that I was going to Ebay, if you want to make me an offer??
