Bradz Z4MC Project thread, Back on the road!

the powder coated rear end looks ACE!! really well done, car is getting some serious love, bet it drives amazing now

Looks great.
I was thinking more about the wings rubbing rather than the inners, but sounds like you've thought it through well enough. Let us know. On the one hand I'm keen to run a square setup for obvious reasons, but the other worries about loss of steering feel and the effect on the rack. Most of the 'cheapo' new mclarens run a 225 front section tyre I think, albeit a very different car I do wonder whether the ability to rotate tyres and perhaps provide greater front grip is outweighed by the negatives. Keen to see how you find it..
As for corner weighting, well given you now have the ability to do it and were setting up the suspension, personally I would have done it, but hardly the end of the world, you can do that some other time.

If I was doing it again... I would probably stick to a 255 all round.. I really wanted to run 265's all round so I could run Cup'2s then I got a deal on Ad08r's. the clearance with a 265 is tiny, on initial tests (Masking tape on the arch and liner) its showing no rubbing after throwing it into a roundabout, even a dab of braking mid corner to push my luck

Maybe its my driving style but I really suffered with under-steer even when powering out of a roundabout into a gentle turn, The M is much better that the Si thanks to the offset bushes, So far my private test track is showing a big improvement in front end grip, although the rear is a bit sketchy but I think that's due to my alignment. Any tips for alignment?

My mate has a Hunter alignment and he owes me a few favours so it didn't cost me, the thought of trying to find a good trustworthy garage to corner weight it is daunting... I don't trust garages hence why I do as much as I can!

Let me know when you are next on Track and I'll see if I can make it. I'm at Bedford tomorrow just testing, Silverstone for piston-heads Sunday service, If tomorrow goes well I want to book Snetterton at the end of the month.

I think if you increase front end grip you will inevitably give the rear a harder time. Personally I found the most effective way to remove understeer is to play with the geo at the rear, maybe see if you can try a few different setups with your mate?
Hope it goes well at Bedford today, weather doesn't look so kind:( I'm at Silverstone on Wednesday all day if you want to swing by, otherwise next I'm in spa beginning of april, and possibly combe mid april.

My thoughts exactly! You are welcome to use my corner weight scales, maybe plan a trip here with Tom who wants to use them to weigh his car? I have been corner weighting Caterhams for years so can give you some pointers.

Oh that sounds like an offer not to be missed. Thanks Dave.

TomK, Its a shame I can't make Wednesday as Silverstone isn't far from me, unfortunately I'm starting a rewire :(

Well BA was wet & greasy, The Ad08r's were really struggling for grip, although the car did feel much more neutral with over/under steer.

Running 3/4 soft all round helped with the grip and 28psiF and 30psiR. Going to back the caster off a bit and see how that effects it.

Anyway great day... and I even got fastest lap of the day according to Harrys Lap timer :driving: (Myself and 8 mates with E46 M3's mostly caged and stripped were all running it)

Car looks great and I love what you've done with the leaky diff-amazing how things can snowball

Looks like a hell of a lot of 'poke' up front in the pic below, (though it doesn't look so extreme in other pics) I'm amazed it doesn't catch. I've found this sort of issue tends to present itself when manouvering and taking a bump (like going over a dropped curb) with a good bit of lock applied. Any issues yet?

I have no idea why it looks so bad in that picture!

I can confirm 100% no rubbing on the Metal arch or the front of the arch liner, It does just brush the rear of the arch liner (Closest to the foot well) on full lock but not enough to create any resistance or damage. The camber must be just enough to tuck it in, No marks on the tyre or bodywork.

excuse the state of the car

Wow, looks completely different in that other pic! Barely any poke at all. In fact, it looks like an 18x9 et30 with a 255 tyre would tuck in nicely.

I'm still amazed that the front arches can take such width. I've measured mine up in the past and i concluded that even just a 10mm spacer probably wouldn't be completely rub-free on the stock wheels and tyres. I guess camber solves all 8)

You are spot on, I recon a 255 on a 9" all round would be perfect, It was originally what I was going for until I realised you cant buy Cup'2s in that size :headbang:

Looks great and glad to hear of no rubbing, though i'll hold out for your report when you go on a dry track and run a curb hard  The loads of a wet day are so much less don't you reckon? Hope you prove me wrong as it's something I'm keen on trying. Let us know after snett please (assuming that's not wet too  ).
Shame you couldn't make silverstone, lucky with the weather, flew the Z4M flag fairly well right up until the point I ran out of fuel
Massive fuel starvation suffered from the saddle tanks after Luffield and Copse, just under a quarter tank still showing :o
Right old school day :D
