Brace problem

How dare you! Just a more diligent owner! ;-)The 'evo' buyers guide originally brought it to my attention.

Just looking, the TIS bulletin was dated 07/2006 and is for vehicles up to production date October 2006.

Titled "Noises from the dome strut mount area"

http://bmw.workshop-manuals.com/Z_Series_E85/Z4_2.0i_N46_ROADST/index.php?id=100

The old bracket shape was used until May 2006 which is identified by an M10 bolt welded in. Torque is 41nm.

After May 2006 the nut was welded to the new bracket instead. It suggests installing a new screw/bolt and torque up to 56nm + 105 degrees + or - 15 degrees. Screw and washer 07 11 9 906 010

If you need a new strut mount to weld on it is 41 007 193 040

Torque of the 3 strut nuts on top of the dome is 34nm but should be replaced if removed. Part 31316769731

"Strut mount fracture, no sir not in these parts, never heard of it"

Maybe try another dealer and quote the TIS bulletin and date?
I must admit, I would be loathed to have it welded privately knowing that BMW are aware of the issue!
Maybe i'm just stubborn!? :-D

I've seen where quite a few had it re-welded. I ended up buying this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ULTRA-RACING-3-POINT-FRONT-RIGID-STRUT-TOWER-BAR-BRACE-02-08-BMW-E85-Z4-ROADSTER-/170951074978?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3ABMW%7CModel%3AZ4&hash=item27cd7a64a2&vxp=mtr

It's a three-way brace. The only downside is it only comes in white, so I had to paint it black. I've had it for about 7-8 months and have had no issues. I have a 3.0i though, so I don't know if it would make a difference in fitment.
HTH

I emailed them asking about the strut pin and the bonnet sensor. I've had no reply.

Could you let us know if you've managed to refit the bonnet sensor, and if this covers the strut pin.

Thanks

Mix a bit of Plastic Padding (or other resin filler) and smooth it over the welded area. When it's set, rub it with Wet & Dry and once it's been painted it'll look perfect.

The date on the document in your link state production up to October 2006. :?

Can't see what difference welding the nut to the bracket will make either.

theirs actual proper bmw replacement pieces for this, personally feel you should have used this instead its a different design... again john hit the nail on the head.... Clearly theirs alot of flex happening in this area, interestly however look at the OPs cracked unit, you can clearly see rust of cracked off edge.... so maybe their was oxidisation happened which weakened this.... with the use my cars had id expect this to happen to mine at some point, ive had a brace on from very earily in the cars life so hopefully that will help.... if not, ill replace with the bmw item and not worry about it tbh...

Perhaps they got it fully corrected by October 2006

At least with a change in design you can quickly see if you have old or new part.

Would agree with others, perhaps a weak area and the extra cross brace should help. When I got my car a few years back I had creaking at low speeds. My car was built April 06 so had the old design. At the same time as torquing all 4 nuts up, all 4 needed it, I fitted the OEM cross brace. Creaking gone.

You guys are the best!!
My strut brace mount snapped last week, and I was just trying to figure out whether it is possible to find anything stronger to weld there (my car is 02.2006) so I dont need to search any more!

One more time this forum saves me a lot of time and effeort 8)
