Boxsters?

...I guess when you spend months searching for the right car and buy it, when you come to sell and find the next car, months of research a year or two later is going to show the same cars as being the best
This is true. Another Z4 then

I'm only 27 myself (as of today) but I probably have the tastes of someone older and yet look much younger.
Happy birthday :bday:

Happy birthday mate

Why not keep the E85 for a bit longer and change to E89 end of next year?

I had a 2000 986 S, i had it almost 4 years, at that age you want a nice wad of receipts for work that has been done on it, aircondensers, rads etc, there are 5 all open to the elements in the front bumper.
otherwise not that expensive to run if you use an indi for servicing such as northways in Reading

from what i remember a later model 2.7 is similar power to an older 3.2s with less insurance too

not a patch on a Z4M though...... :driving:

When the day came where I felt I needed a change, I was looking at perhaps changing the Z for a 2007-08 Cayman S. But after reading about all of these maintenance issues, I'm realy being turned off by that choice. I do also remember searching for some papers in a 928S years back at the garage where I worked, only to find a thick pile of repair invoices that made my stomach turn! and the car had less than 30K on it! Ouch!

The Boxster is a better car to drive - i don't think anyone would say otherwise (unless talking about an //M where the performance difference can sway it).

I've driven old ones and new ones, and to be honest, they're all the same Boxster underneath - fantastic to drive, and all leaking oil. My mate at work just got an RS60 - less than a year old and its leaking oil. My brothers 2001 2.7 did the same. The friends 2002 3.2S does the same. A friend's 991 GT3 does the same.

No idea why Porsche can't sort this out - but, if this was our 3rd car, rather than our second, that would be OK - but I need to use this everyday and not worry about things breaking - its a very good compromise.

Nowt wrong with slow constant oil leaks, they keep the engine protected from corrosion :D

It's when they get worse or bits break I'd worry... by the sounds of things a lot of the leaks are just that, slow steady seepage. It's the odd failures that worry me though. Are they related? Owners letting them leak/burn off oil till they run dry? Letting a slow steady seep get worse and not spotting it?!

I wouldn't touch an older boxter if you want to keep you wallet in tact. My boss has an 02 3.2S and it had a small oil leak, cost £ 800 to fix as the engine had to come out to get at it. And that was at an indy ,not main stealer.

Sounds like a RMS= Rear Main Seal. The leak is so little alot dont bother but if you unlucky it can get on the clutch. was it really a full engine out or maybe just the Gear box?

I guess i can make a worth while comment having both.

2 Different cars both great. Less drama in the box as the handling and grip is mind blowing. 986 the styling outside is classic really my taste inside is a little dated but new steering wheel and nice stereo would make it better.

I goto a local indy and apart from the last 2 years: RMS, Clutch + Service last year £900 New Discs Pads and serivce this year £730 the car either has a £180 service or £380 serivce i have yearly oil changes when a service isnt required.

The only issue in most owners mind is IMS as highted. Theres bearings on the shaft which if you unlucky have been know to dry out and fail causing engine failure. £5k-£10k engine rebuild......... You only here about the ones that go not the 1000's that dont though.

Have a test drive. I wouldnt go for anything Sub £10k though.

Cheers

OK - to add to this, my mate with an RS60 - it went in to get the oil leak fixed and they've given him a brand new 911 Carrera S PDK in the meantime - 3000 miles (ok, so not BRAND new, but it's an 09 plate) - its got an oil leak?!?!?!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE porsches, and will get one relatively soon once I've sorted out the house - but I can see this really p*ssing me off!

Hmm, it's nice to see some positives (thanks PaulN) but the oil RMS and IMS do worry me, one is common but affordable, the other is much less common but also massivly expensive :|
I guess a test drive will give me an idea if it's worth the risk. I'm off to pickup my Brera tomorrow, the local dealership with a 2.7 Boxster seems quite keen to get thier hands on my Brera, but their Boxster is well overpriced.

I'm still on the look out for a good Z4 3.0 too, but they seem so overpriced at the moment and mostly underspecced
I can see myself buying a banger to drive for a few months if my Brera sells. Wait until December-January when people are desperate for cash

They recon its less that 2% of cars sold that have the problem.
Check out the link.

I changed my Z4 for a boxster 2 months ago and am still smiling. Its in a different league. No rattles or squeeks. With the roof up its like a hard top. Far better roof than the Z. Build quality is far better.

the boxter is an old design and a poor mans 911 IMO. Get another z herminator- time for the //M? :poke:

The M is definetly out of the question, no matter how much I'd like one.
I'm looking at getting onto the housing market now, so it'll either be a cheap Boxster (unlikely) or something like an older 530i, which seem to be good value at £5-6k

A Z4MC will have to wait a few years
