Boot soft close failure-Fixed

Hi, I think I’m going to carry out this repair.

Quick question, if I wanted to extend the wires slightly to give a little more flexibility, which type of wire do I need to obtain?

Has anyone here done this? I’ve read on another forum about it being 0.25mm flexible wire perhaps?

Just as of today:

Perfect!

After renovation of the wires, i always secure the strain relief with fabric tape and cable ties like on the following pic:

Hello,

Just a quick update and another question!

A new mechanism finally arrived from BMW. 5 wires re-connected, boot light working fine.

Closed boot, vehicle latches and soft close works, opens fine!! As expected from a new part I guess.

However, one issue I now have, and that is it won’t lock. It latches and soft closes fully, but when I press key fob, doors lock but the boot can still be opened.

Is there something I’ve missed? I’m pretty certain I seated all the cables fully.

The car hasn’t been driven for over 10 days due to awaiting the part. Could a low battery be an issue (even though the doors lock).

Any help as always greatly appreciated.

EDIT:

Solved. My car has keyless entry (which I found out TODAY), and apparently the boot remains unlocked when key is in vicinity.

Every day is a school day.

Soldering iron and solder £10.
For me it was when I noticed that my boot light would not work sometimes , but it was intermitent, and It was not until the winter, earlier dark nights that it was a problem. Having checked the bulb and fuse, I just went with a quick solution and fitted a cheap motion sensor led light.

Okay great I thought, then my soft close boot stopped working !"

BUgger !

So some research on the internet provided a possible solution., to what many would say is a design problem. Any way I removed the boot panel and the mechaism and once on my work bench it was obvious that the cables on one side have failed due to constant bending. The other side was fine.

So a quick fix was to just reconnect the cables ( i just used spade connectors, as this was what I had) and I realeased the BMW clips on both sides so the cable would float freely.

This solved the boot light problem and the soft close :)

Cost = £ 0
Time = Less than 1 hr.

I have photos, and I will post them later :)

But i already had soldering iron and solder, so cost me £0.
But don't have spade connectors that might get caught when the wire flexes.
Still any fix is a fix.
