BMW Warranty

I’m after some opinions as I’m pretty clueless when it comes to this sort of thing.

All the previous cars I’ve owned have been run & run & run to the extent that when stuff was needed doing as it required to pass the MOT I just paid for it & considered it part of the expense of owning the car. Or it’s been a company car & it’s all taken care of by fleet services as part of the agreement
.

I keep seeing you guys mentioning the BMW warranty & I googled it.

So I’ve been quoted £719.00 per year for comprehensive warranty but I don’t know what that really means if I’m honest.

If anyone can succinctly explain I’d appreciate it or is it really on a case by case basis so for example if my roof motor breaks that’s always covered or it’s only covered if …

BDub has recommended to me to visit our local BMW garage for MOT & Service so if I’m going to use them rather than an independent does that influence the need for the warranty? Or does it make it redundant?

Help please

So I guess reading the overview & FAQ’s …

Is it something people generally recommend?

For perspective I’m under normal circumstances looking at driving it roughly 8k a year & that’s a high estimate as I’m a teacher so for at least 12 weeks of the year it’s not doing much as I’m using the family car.

Car is an 11 plate & has done 34k miles

I’ll stop having a conversation with myself now

Until I read your last line I was going to comment on you talking to yourself Martin

I asked a very similar question when I got my first Z4. The consensus seemed to be it greatly depends on what model you have.

I had a 23i and was advised that those and the 30i have little issues re reliability and to stick the £60 in a bank account every month and hope nothing popped whereas a lot of people wouldn’t own a 35 unless it did have a warranty.

Same with all insurance, it’s expensive……………. Until you need it

& now I’ve found the overview tab on the BMW website :headbang:

I’ll start there

I looked at getting one, but it does not cover seals or oil leaks.
Also, they limit each claim to no more than £5000 in costs I think, and on BMW per hour charges that does not cover much, even the timing chain guides issue. A new engine from BMW would cost something silly like £14k.

So, if you pay what you would have paid on a warranty into a separate account and use that for repairs, you will be better off.

Also, they cheap out on diagnostics costs and with your excess, that would pay for all the smaller jobs anyway.

Long story short,

The small jobs they don’t really cover as they charge for diagnostics

Large jobs they don’t cover, such as engine replacement.

Common faults, seals and leaks are not covered, perhaps all perishable items?

I was left thinking what would I actually use it for?

PointedMarlin, I suggest you read all or the last few pages of https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=32132&start=150

My experience of BMW Insured Warranty on a 35iS is very good. Mine's well under £500 and, even with a £250 excess - a £100 excess is available at a higher premium, of course - it's much more than paid for itself.

Like other insurance, it also provides peace of mind. So, I recommend it.
