"BMW Supercharger Kit"

Just buy a readymade one, week later its done!!!

Also some like the challenge pal. I don't want lots of off the shelf stuff on my car. I want it a little more personal.

I'll be amazed if a collaborative effor like this can be made to work. E.g.

1. Whose car will the work be done on?
2. Who will pay for issues resolution - snagging and really major ones?
3. How will you deal with people who pay up front and then a year later change their mind or their circumstances change?
4. Etc.

Happy to be proved wrong but I'm cynical about the likely success of this sort of thing.

I've not read much of this thread, so sorry if I'm covering old ground, but has anyone spoken to companies that have experience with kit from the likes of VF??

I had a proper VF kit on my golf and it was superb, and with WI added I got more than an extra 100BHP.

FWIW Regal (http://www.regal-auto.co.uk/) supercharged a couple of M3's when I was into my VWs, so they might be worth having a chat with.

Well done on getting this thread back on track ! - I'm certainly interested and watching (most of it) keenly. . . .

So after going through the fellas facebook profile and reading his recent posts, by the sound of it he has found a supercharger and just fancies putting a kit together!!

We can do that! But I'm sure with the heads around here it will be beautiful! Price wise, if we can get it to as close to the 1k mark as possible, I think we would be on to a winner

M62
Brackets
Pulley (may be possible to borrow mac's that came in his kit to get dims)
Piping
Mapping

Does anyone on here own the equipment or know someone who has experience with this?

Would still like to look if the M50 inlet manifold fits too

Might be naughty but why not get hold of a VF supercharger kit and see how you can take cost out of it? This is how most products are made cheaper nowadays.

The blower alone is $2380 USD. Add to that the custom bracket, injectors, tune, bypass, molded piping, K&N filter, misc hardware/bolts/clamps, misc hoses, instructions, tech support, warranty...

I came from a modified supercharged car (mx5) to the Z4 as i couldn't be bothered constantly fiddling anyome
the eaton M45 ran out of steam on MX5's around 220bhp and you were having to over-spin the hell out of them and inter cool them to get that so there is no way something so small would work on a 3.0l engine

The M62's were a better choice much more efficient but these are no longer available new

one thing i can't see mentioned is what will be used to control the supercharger itself? the Merc blowers have an electromagnetic clutch that disengages the charger when not on load and the Mini's had a vacuum operated bypass that did the same. The last thing you want is the have the charger constantly compressing air when it is not required it just creates loads of heat and parasitic drag.

I'm guessing that it has a vacuum bypass. That is normal in these kind of kits. Mosts units already have a bypass valve integrated in the inlet of the supercharger. That looks like this:
blower-eaton-series1-4-1.jpg

Unless they source the unit from an old mercedes of course....
Getting a switched electrical signal from the ecu that is rpm programmable is pretty hard I imagine...

I dont have the time or desire to do this at the moment even think about it. I need to get mine back together and drive it!! But i am sure next year or over the colder months. I will be keen again.

It seems like its a mine field and maybe a vf or other kit might be the way to go. save up and wait for an offer??

I believe regal have done an n52 supercharger out of an ESS for a 330.

But saying that I've been turned away from ESS due to the reliability and customer support.

Also all their maps are based in us quality fuel which is 92ron.

You have 1st hand experience with ESS supercharger systems?

Nope was very close to it and had an army of folks pull me away.
They had first hand.

Just sharing the information as a word of caution.

So you never even spoke with someone from ESS?

I know for sure that their mappings aren't just based on 92ron.
The more performance based kits are 98 ron advised.
I know this on 1st hand experience.
And they will do adjusted mappings.
Customer support is also good and foremost very knowledgeable.

You do know that the US fuel "RON" value is calculated differently than the European "RON" and the two numbers are not directly comparable? The US method will give a lower number for the same fuel.

In the usa they use AKI as octane rating (and that is indeed lower for the same rated fuel)
94 AKI is about 98 RON

There you go, the benefits of a forum where information shared and clarified.

And yes I did speak to them
