I fully agree around schools etc but its just such a slow speed. Driving in Bristol and Bath where every other small road is 20 is ridiculous. It just feels very unnecessary

Sounds like a money making scheme.
Its hard enough sticking to 30mph never mind 20mph.
Around my area a few years ago they lowered quite a few of the NSL roads to 30 +40mph roads.
At the same time the cops sat with their speed guns catching the people who might not have noticed the change in the speed limit.

Its almost as funny as the other charity calling for young drivers to have like a years driving before they pass their test and then have a curfew for a further year so they cant drive at night to reduce accidents.

Stupid.

30 -> 20 = increase in people speeding = more revenue via speed traps, end of.

I wonder what the green lobby would have to say about this , most cars would have to be in third gear with the increase in fuel consumption , I have no problem having the 30 limit enforced and it should be treat like a maximum not a target speed. I do feel more pedestrian education is needed especially in schools , I do have schoolkids paying little regard to their surroundings when crossing or playing chicken with you forcing you to brake , why not a jaywalking charge just like our American friends have.

A variable 20mph limit at certain times of the day is a good idea which most drivers would adhere to if they can see a reason for it say outside a school however the same limit on the same road at say 4am would be ignored. Speed itself does not kill, it's bad driving that kills

The 30 mph limit was introduced at a time when cars had brakes on the rear wheels only and were operated by cables!

I'll do them a deal. They can have 20mph in built up areas if we can have the speed limit unrestricted on road in non built up areas (whatever they are).

I like this idea.

The other thing with a 20mph limit is that car 'city brake' functions only work up to 20mph. I wonder if the car industry are pushing for this?

Id go further and remove all road paint and signage, make the driver think more about whats around them - will actually slow em up naturally...

The wife's Volvo has "city-safe" which prevents collisions at speeds of 17mph and below. Maybe 20 mph is too fast?

Yes, most cars seem to have the city safe working at 30kmh which is the usual speed limit in built up areas in Europe. 30k is about 17/18mph. I don't think having a speed limit of 18mph will be any more popular than 20. :poke:

I ride my push bike quicker... Fully support variable speeds outside schools etc but the evidence is poor that it improves KSIs as you usually cannot differentiate the benefit of speed reduction for other road changes needed to make 20mph self sustaining or enforceable.

Haven't they actually tried this somewhere and it worked. Holland?

Exhibition Road in South Kensington - it's called Shared Space, although IIRC, it was a Dutchman that came up with the original concept

Behind every good idea is a Dutchman.

Me going to the UK was like a missionary task, bring civilisation to the UK 8)

some place in cheshire too if i remember right....

on the whole it looked a good idea but i wouldn't want it everywhere unless they had a sensible systematic and pragmatic way. i drive a decent distance to work down a urban dual carriageway that is 30 if this were 20 it would take ages.

As a pedestrian and cyclist I've found that 20mph limit areas in Cambridgeshire & London are more dangerous to cross/cycle on. On the road I find more drivers are very aggressive around cyclists and will tend to bully them out of the way & also just do really stupid things (eg. accelerate around a cyclist only to pull in and jam the brakes on to avoid hitting car coming the other way). As a pedestrian drivers in general aren't as alert to pedestrian crossings nor do they pay as much attention when taking a side turning.

From talking to someone who looks into these sorts of things on a statistical front. In Cambridgeshire the number of reported minor collisions increase when a 20mph limit is introduced. Also, while KSIs are reduced in 20mph limit areas, they increase on the surrounding roads to give the same or sometimes higher level of KSIs in the 20mph limit & immediate area.

20mph limits aren't the answer to increasing road safety in the UK right now. If road safety is really a priority we need to get proper policing of the roads under existing laws and the introduction of new laws to start making motorists in general really thing about their behaviour on the road.

i would agree but with one caveat..... start make ALL ROAD users in general. bikes/motorbikes/cars/lorrys/pedestrians are all to blame.
