Well we have a blanket 20mph in most of edinburgh coming from April next year. Great - not! Like most people there are places where this is needed but an entire city or an entire country it's of no use. It would take forever to get places. Once your on the motorway, great but until you get there not so good.

And you move 30mph to 20mph so where does this stop? I can see them trying to reduce other limits.

Sounds like another scam to me, most modern cars come with cruse control that will happily sit at 30mph so a driver can concentrate on the road not the speedo.
There's not many that operate at 20mph, so there's a much higher chance of even the most careful of drivers getting fined for a momentary lapse in concentration.

i would agree but with one caveat..... start make ALL ROAD users in general. bikes/motorbikes/cars/lorrys/pedestrians are all to blame.
Unfortunately motorists cause far more than their fair share of incidents on the road, as well as carrying far more danger into the incident to start with. This makes going after motorists a huge win in road safety. Conversely, targeting other groups will show almost inconsequential safety gains.

Speed is made out to be a really bad thing that should be lowered.
Personally sometimes I think people are paying more attention to sticking to 30mph limits than concentrating on the road in front of them.
Its probably safer to travel at a speed you would guess was 30mph but concentrating on the road than constantly looking at the speedo to make sure you are only doing 30mph.
Cameras are put up in accident blackspots and then you have people staring at the speedo on the way past the camera to make sure they dont get fined instead of looking at the road and surroundings.

It works both ways here........pedestrians need to be held accountable too! The amount of people who just walk out without looking or standing in the middle of the road whilst there is a crossing just feet away is getting beyond a joke. We all grew up with the 'green cross code' and just like in America, Jay Walking in the UK is also an offence. Maybe if these laws were actually enforced would people actually have more regard for their own safety.

I've seen children pull their parents back on to the pavement when a car is coming. If that's what they've got for a role model then God help us all!

Personally in town centre I can't see an issue because the traffic anyway will probably not allow for more than 20mph. Considering most people I have pass me or sit right up my a$$ are doing or have been doing more than 30mph in a 30mph zone shows that possibly there is a need to reduce to it 20mph to get these people to slow down to even 30mph.

i drive a decent distance to work down a urban dual carriageway that is 30 if this were 20 it would take ages.

A 30 mile journey would take an extra half hour.

A six mile journey at 30 mph is 12 minutes.

A six mile journey at 20 mph is 18 minutes

A 6 minute difference.

My partner drives 2 miles through town and her average speed is about 8 mph!

Perhaps it's just me, but Angie4m's post just reminded me of "frogger". Use to love this game in the 80's/90's... :D

(and for the uninitiated, there's a free version here)
