Their protectant is also a waterproofer, which causes some people on here to have kittens, Been using it on a regular basis for 2 years and so far no one has died, my wife hasn't divorced me, the sky hasn't fallen down and no kittens were thrown into rivers, and oh yeah the roof looks great.

  :happyclap:
Can't understand why you have to get so exercised any time any one states the facts
methinks you protest too much
He asked about the best not the cheapest

So the consencus is to use autoglym? If roof is meant to allow water through, what happens then? I presume that the autoglym does not allow the water to penetrate the outer layes?Surely thats the better option. A bit like applying wax to car paintwork. Water beads and runs off?

Don't forget that since Autoglym let's the water run off it will also protect the canvas from other nasties such as bird droppings.

I think the only reason BMW, made the hood three layered is so that the waterproof inner layer could not be easily damaged.
So the outer cover is just the protective cover.
So if a cat gets on the roof and sticks it's claws though, the hood will still be waterproof.
Therefore I don't think it matters if the outer cover is water proof or not.

Please quote from my post where I said it was the cheapest...
and as has already been posted people have used the fantastically great BMW stuff and some have got green roofs, It just annoys me when people wont look past BMW products thinking them to be the best ever when infact most of them are second rate, and some are best avoided altogether, but each to their own.

Autoglym gets my vote. Worth getting it as part of the three for two deal if you feel like going to Halfords and need some other cleaning products. Didn't find it much cheaper online when I looked a month ago, and it's another excuse to take the Zeddy out.

Autoglym is designed for hoods like a MX5 where it is meant to be waterproof

MX-5 Mk3+ outer fabric is identical to the Z4's - it's also made by the same company as you mentioned.

Raggtopp is also a waterproofer like Autoglym.

So rather than do this dance every time it comes up - given the Z4 is 9yrs old - has anyone had any issues with a product designed for use with fabric convertible roofs? There's no point assuming when we've got 9yrs of data available.

Nail + head

My Z4's 7.5 years old but probably isn't the best example for durability as it's covered <33k miles and has been garaged overnight for the past 5+ years (can speak for the first owner, but the one before me garaged it too). I've used Raggtopp. I've used Autoglym. And guess what... my roof hasn't died a horrible death yet :)

On previous cars Z3 and TT I have always used Renovo and then used Fabsil tent proofer works brilliant better than anything else I have tried. Beads well and protects from UV etc. Really easy to use.

"But BMW have designed the roof to let water through", ....
We hear it in every roof treatment thread, and still no one takes a blind bit of notice of it, and still no one has had a roof that has rotted away

Damn, I've been trying to give mine excuses but she won't bite. Guess I'll stick with Autoglym

I used RaggTopp.

My canvas top was seriously brown with ingrained dirt, it now looks like brand new and water beads off it. It's pretty amazing stuff.
