Best Model.

Hi everyone, looking to buy a z4 but unsure as to which is the model to go for ie engine size, the 2.5 looks attractive because of insurance costs but what about the 2ltr, how does it compare on performance with the 2.5,? probably spending about 10k so maybe 2005 model with 40k on the clock.
Any advice would be most welcome on what i need to look for and pit falls.
Cheers John.

having had a 2.0 and now a 2.5 i much prefer the 2.5 the silky smooth 6 cylinder is the best choice,,, just my opinion i am sure the 3.0 guys will tell you thats the way to go

Yup, 6-pot for sure, 2.5 is pokey and when you're 6 inches off the ground the difference in speed won't matter, but I love my 3.0

I'd try to get an Si Sport with either engine for the spec because they are really good value right now, but understand the standard spec and look out for SEs masquerading as Sports because i found a few on my journey to ownership... and of course only a roadster is a proper Z, don't listen to the Coupe'd up club :poke:

Hi John and welcome,

I think you need to ask a few questions and then the decisions starts to become clearer
Is insurance, fuel, tax an issue?
How many miles do you plan to drive?
Is it a long term keeper?
Is it a daily drive or weekend 'toy'?
Is age or mileage an issue?

£10k will get you a nice example

For the record though I'd always have a 3.0 because I love the performance, 6 cylinder and higher spec they tend to have.

Thanks everyone, i have to say im now 58 so getting on a bit, having run old classics, TR4, TR6, and the occasional MK2 Jag plus a few pre-war ones im now finding i need a bit more comfort but still crave something a bit sporty, i love the shape of the Z4 and the BMW rock solid reputation and after looking at other 2 seaters i dont think anything else comes close for value for money.
It will be a second car so " my toy " if you know what i mean, hope to do a bit of continental motoring next year so im eager to get fixed up but not having any past experience with Z4s im trying to gain as much info as possible so im most grateful for all your advice and comments.
This will be my last "toy" i imagine so will be keeping it for a few years, god willing, another good reason for choosing a Z4.
Insurance wont be a problem or running costs but would like to keep the price around the £10k.
Thankyou for the kind welcome and hope maybe to meet up with some of you in the future.

Hi John

In my opinion, only cos I just bought one on a 56 plate, would be to get a 3.0 Si Sport. This is in the 10 grand region, is face lift, sound of the engine is brilliant, mpg is good, better than 2.5 but not much more than 2.0, and the reputation of the 3.0 straight six for reliability is excellent.

My father has the 2.0 l but regrets to a certain degree, wishing he got the 3.0 l.

I suggest the 3.2 M Coupe  but, you would need to get an 06 - 08 and might be a little more spendy

for continental motoring i would possible consider a rag top, the draw back is that the boot space is not as big as the coupe, if you go in hotels its not a problem, but camping may be an issue

I would go for a 3.0. You'll love the power. I test drove a 2.5 prior to buying my 3.0. You won't notice a difference at low speed. But during 'spirited' driving, the 3.0 is far better.

Good luck in the hunt for your perfect zed

Agreed  Is Taz going soft on floppys after all ? :poke:

However I did see someone's write-up of their continental trip on here who used this to increase luggage space : http://www.boot-bag.com/

Worth a gander - great that the image on the front page is a Z4

John

Having answered the questions you can see the team are already closing in on it for you.

From what I read:
Discount the ///M - out of budget and the battey removes all boot space
Soft top based upon touring in Europe and harking back to the old TR's, etc.
You need the 2.5 or 3.0 for the performance you seek and the cost are less important
Beware though the 3.0 has harder (///M) sport supsension as standard Vs the 2.5

So for me it 2.5 if you want manual and 3.0 if you want auto (this one mates to the auto best of all).

Biased as everyone is, but I'd take the 3.0 auto given all you posted, it being perhaps you'r last purchase and a keeper.

cj10jeeper, you are the voice of reason in amongst our enthusiastic yapping

+1 on the auto 3.0, it's very very smooth, and extremely flexible dependent upon your driving mood of the moment, or indeed your evolving driving style over time. Non-Run-Flats will help the ride as said many times on here, and as I have experienced with my winters. Good luck with your search John !

Are you feeling alright Taz???

OP - seriously consider a rag top though! 10 seconds and the roofs gone! I went round Europe last summer and I would have been gutted if I couldn't drop the roof! The country roads in France/Germany were fab!

+ you will prob get a better example for your money! :driving:

Nothing wrong with a 2.0 :)

Of course there's nothing wrong with a 2.0, but take a look at the requirements and then see how well it fits. I just think the 2.0 is direct to a different set of needs than those here
