Best bean-to-cup machine

Marlon said:
call me a coffee philistine, but bean-to-cup / pod-to-cup - it's still coffee :)

When it comes down to it, yes it's all coffee BUT with a bean to cup machine you can choose your beans, the roast, the grind, the amount of water through the grounds. If you buy artisan coffee it's fresher as it will have been roasted usually not too longer before you bought it which can effect the taste. You can choose a blend of a single origin. I especially love Monsoon Malaba but this is only really avalible at a certain time of year.

You can't guarantee how 'fresh' the coffee is in the pods, I've only found that Nespresso put the roasting date on their boxes but still it could be months old before you get it. If you like a decent cup of coffee then a pod machine is more than adequate. If however your a bit more discerning and really into coffee you probably want a bit more from your drink. I even roast my own coffee beans but it can be a bit messy when the husks come off.

I have a Delonghi, never got rid of it so it's in a box in the spare room and replaced it with a Jura. I love my coffee machine and had a gaggia before them but that's with my parents looking pretty. For decaf in the evening I use a Nespresso but that's only for occasional use if I fancy a coffee that won't keep me up all night.

Currently looking at houses out of town and one of my needs is a good size kitchen and a built in coffee machine is something I want to install. The rest of the house could be pants as long as I have a nice kitchen and a coffee machine

I have bosch tassimo and buy the Costa pods. Has the smell and proper nice taste. It's container feed. But since I've had it don't bother with any other coffee. Some machines are very high price and messing about with grinding, Cleaning etc takes away the enjoyment of drinking it IMO the tassimo is so simple put pod in push button and throw away pod when done. The nozzle comes apart and goes in dishwasher and when machine needs clean just run descaler through when light appears. And of course the main thing for me was initial cost of purchase got machine for under £80

After months of umming and ahhing I took the plunge. The day after I read this thread and your recommendation they were selling Bosch Tassimos at half price in Sainsbury's, and had an offer on the Americano pods too (£3 for 16). Bought a machine and 4 packets of pods, Wonderful - the smell the taste, perfect
Glad you like it Marlon. If you keep looking each of the large supermarkets compete with each other on the pods so at least one will have offers on the Costa pods

And if you have a Costco card or know someone who does they also do offers on the pods quite a bit in the warehouse. My dad has a tassimo and loves it.

The Jura looks pricey to me :?

I think there are two camps here, those who see it as bit of an art to make the perfect coffee and those that just want a more decent cup without spending a fortune.

I can see the argument that bean coffee is more fresh than pod coffee but I think for me pod coffee won't be far off if its sealed in fresh.

Will definitely go for the Bosch Tassimo and see how it fares, for 50 quid has to be worth a shot :)

Tim my Dad loves his and you can get tea for it too. I keep some chai lattes at my folks for use in it. The chocolate is also quite good.

Oh and Jura's can be pricey but you can get them from about £550 from Costco or when John Lewis have a sale.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with it, my Dad especially loves the Costa latte and Americano and he's a big Costa fan when he's out and about.

And have you worked out the cost, per cup, of yor coffe over, say, a three year period versus a Jura? The real cost of a pod system is how much it costs for the pods! It is a bit like comparing a laser printer to an ink jet - they sell one very cheap but the consumables are where they make the money. Go figure!

Thanks Angie  I'm hoping I can manage to get out of work tomorrow and sneak off and get one :) I'm unsure I want to spend over 500 quid as thats my deposit on the next BMW :)

I've got a De longhi with a tank on the side ( no not one as on my avatar)
I fill the tank with the filtered water from the fridge so doesn't need the internal water filter. It's got a removable milk frother if you need a cappicino.

About £650 three of four years ago - I'd buy another one

I've gone for the Bosch Tassimo Suny at £49.99 from Sainsburys and really pleased with it. Brews up in 20 secs or so and no fuss .Only criticism is the water tank is quite small as it a slimline design but otherwise it's great for what I need. :)

I had a tassimo a few years back but I found the amount it put in the cup was pretty poor... it said to keep pressing the button to fill it up more, but then the coffee was weak.

Tassimo isn't bean to cup tho ?

I know, I was just stating my experience with pod machines is the reason I am now looking for a bean to cup machine

Nice one, I'm loving mine

Last three places ive worked at had, in order:

Nespresso (big ole industrial one for employees who drink it intravenously)
Starbucks in house
Tassimo (current)

Nespresso was great, actually quite liked it - the light brown cups were my fav.
Starbucks machine.. pretty s**t, even if we replaced all coffee with something more favourable (anything non starbucks..), but it did have the added benefit of being an actual coffee machine so you can do what you like with it.
Tassimo - we bought it for our little office here from ocado.. it's meh. I have about 20 of every type of coffee available on amazon/tassimo site nad i still can't finda quality coffee. The best thing is the nostalgia offered by the cheap tasting hot chocolate (akin to hospital waiting rooms)

If i had to - i'd get a nespresso, but for home really you can't beat an electric grinder and a cafetierre, otherwise just break out the nescafe azera..

So I drink black coffee only, don't need or want any of this fancy stuff. Until recently I used already ground coffee and a cafetierre but it never tasted like coffee shop coffee, no mateer what coffee i tried.

Now have a Krups dolce gusto machine which makes nice coffee wit the Grande Intenso pods. I do wonder though if there is a better option, but guessing it would only be with a bean-to-cup machine as I assume the cafetierre coffee isn't as good due to the lack of pressure, but could be completely wrong.

Angie4m should be along soon to tell you what's what regarding bean to cup coffee

Apologies if it went off topic as its bean to cup machine that's been discussed but thanks to Marlon I'm perfectly happy with the Bosch Tassimo. I'm currently having a cup of Cosco Americano and it tastes much better than the instant jar coffee so happy with that. I'm sure if you spent hundreds more on a bean to cup machine then I would expect better results but then I wouldn't spend that much personally as although I like a nice coffee I'm not so anal about it. A useful thread all the same :)

Tim

If cost per cup of coffee comes into it I'm sure the pods lose the argument. How much are they, around 30p each? On that basis, the £6 bag of coffee beans I buy every month or so would only make about 20 cups, I reality I get at least twice that. OK, someone can do the calcs taking into account capital cost of the machine etc but I can't be arsed :)

It really depends on how you like your coffee anyhow. My De Longhi bean to cup machine is so easy to use and the control over coffee flavour and strength is great. I used to have a separate maker and grinder, admitted that is a messy business that I wouldn't go back to.

The one I get work out at 21p each. Would be interested to know the cost per cup on a bean to cup machine approx.
