Beer

Fred, we all know you're actually quite partial to a gin and tonic, which complements your wood interior incredibly well!
:P

We have Rebellion brewery around here and they brew some lovely ales and beers. They also do a lager for the girls...John :P

I’ve had a couple I don’t mind admitting.....

I’ve been a real ale supporter for years, never could understand this lager crap.

Craft beers are a new but welcome addition, here in Leicestershire we have a few microbreweries including Charnwood, they do.a great bitter called Vixen.

My son runs a microbrewery near Glasgow. He's totally spoiled me for mainstream beer now :-)
He did a limited edition Imperial Russian Stout matured in whisky casks last year, which was amazing.

Missus likes an early morning run out to Southwold of a weekend. Suits me as we park near the Adnams brewery and it would be sacrilege not to come home with a mini keg of Broadside or Ghostship

It is too, one of my favourite brews :D . I thoroughly recommend the brewery tour if you're ever in the area. Problem is the mini kegs are just that.. keg not cask. Originally Ghostship was available as a mini cask i.e. a live beer which had to settle for at least 24hrs before drinking. Supermarket pressure had them produce it as a keg i.e. a bright beer ready to drink immediately. I think it lost some flavour when it changed & it doesn't regas itself like the cask does. I complained to Adnams directly about it & they explained the reasons to me. Then they sent me, FOC, a Broadside & a Southwold bitter which are both still produced as mini casks. Result  .

Broadside is my favourite, but has close competition from Abbot Ale

That’s the one I like too. The massive xmas pudding taste carries the alcohol very well. Lagavulin 16 is my go-to and, amongst less oily malts, I think Arran 14 is underrated and great value.

Also a Ghost Ship fan - great shout. Didn’t know you used to be able to get proper mini casks of it. What a shame they stopped.

My go-to Malt has always been Glen Morangie, which is handy as I got a bottle for Christmas! But I like trying others out as well, and also have a soft spot for Glen Ord as the distillery is in Muir of Ord which is where my Dad was born.

Anyway to return to beer, back in the early 90s I ended up working in Sittingbourne. Not a fantastic place, but it is where Shane Byrne of British Superbike super-stardom came from and it was handy for a channel-hop if you were getting low on Marlboro or booze!

My boss and her husband (her boss) lived in Faversham and he was a big fan of Spitfire, brewed in the same town by Shepherd Neame. But because of the nonsensical UK tax regime it was cheaper for him to do a booze-cruise and buy it in France - no wonder we have problems with the ozone layer and global warming!

When I'm sitting on my favourite bench in the park (or bus shelter) I am quite happy to drink a six pack of Tenants Super. :dizzy:
