From memory, isn't yours a 2.0l and non Msport package?

(I only ask the question and don't intend ANY criticism here!)

Mines the 2.0 M Sport :)

I'm not saying the Zed is a poor drivers car by any means but what I'm saying is whether you prefer the looks or the drive? You get used to driving the Zed daily as much as I do ejoy it, but then when I jumped into an F20 118d Sport bearing in mind in wasn't in M Sport spec and I immediately thought how much sharper it was to drive compared my Z4 in M Sport Spec, hell even a MINI Diesel I drove recently handled better

But as said its whether you need the practicality and the end of the day if not the ability to have the roof down still sways it.

If the roof didn't come down - I wouldn't have a Zed - I only bought one so I could get some wind in my bald patch!
I'm sure my old E85 was a sharper drive but life is all about compromise I'm afraid!
I'll bet you're glad you specced the Msport package tho.

Not sure how you can come to this conclusion if you've not driven a Z4 35i Tim ? Or have you ?

I haven't no which is why it would be good to drive both back to back but my pre drive thoughts would be the 1er would be better, it has a roof for starters, thé E89 across the range ers on the soft side

Tim.
My thoughts are the Zed is better. The centre of gravity is lower so better in the twisty stuff.

I'm not so sure, the Zed I would imagine has much less chassis rigidity even with roof up, low centre of gravity helps but I bet there isn't that much difference, the F20 isn't exactly an MPV.

They always seem tall and thin when I pass them on the track and a little unstable. Could be the drivers of course.

The thing I'd hate is being just another 1 series. In the wash of 116d/116i's on every road.. No individuality. Only those in the know would know what it was.

Couldn't agree more!

I took mine to Italy last year and had comments like "Belisimo" (sorry about the spelling) The Italians make some nice looking super sports cars yet they still commented on my zed. I don't think they would have even noticed yet another Euro box - no matter how accomplished a performer it is or how different the paint scheme!

Mine is only a 3.0 Msport and I'm not that embarrassed by either its performance or handling. It may show up on a track day but on a day to day basis its ok with me - Fast enough to get an old boy like me into trouble!

As for chassis rigidity and CofG - how are people measuring these shortcomings?

I'd go for a test drive anyway, but keep the zed. If you don't need the space then why would you? I've been looking at M135's (after 335's) and the coupe looks good, but finding a manual that isn't in that awful light metallic blue is not easy.

As a second runabout, a first edition which you dont see on the roads now. yes, I'm keeping the special car too! Argument defeated.

I'll believe it when I see it :poke:

You can not compare the two, drive both.

All the reasons Maniac sites are the reasons I love mine.

I travel the same twisty B road daily, and I can carry considerably more speed in the Mlite.

But the winner for me, when I get home, I don't need to check the wheels to see if they are broken, as it sounded like they had every time I went over a bump. And my spine never feels like its been smashed.

I know that I've said it before but----- I bought my 3.0l zed as a modern day Healey 3000. I couldn't afford one in my youth and indeed wouldn't want or deal with the un reliability of one now - The 3.0 zed fills the bill. If I wanted a fast saloon car there are others I would also have to consider along side of the M135 I'm not joined at the hip with BMW.

But Keith and Tim - you both aren't totally capable of looking at this subjectively!

Tim - you've often implied you wish you'd had the M135i instead of the Z4, had it been available when you got the Z4.

And Keith - you had a bad start to your Z4 ownership (as did I), so that has possibly tainted your view. But your Z4 is ok now isn't it?

Both of you came from 1'ers to Z4 (as I did). I'd not go back to a 1'er (although we still have one) from a Z4. In fact, after the shambles I had, I'm seriously considering not another BMW next time round.

And Keith - it was you who dragged me kicking and screaming into a Z4 (well, talked about it on babybmw and made me jealous!) so you cant get rid of it!

Monthly payments might be similar, but remember they are stealers, so you will be losing money somewhere in the deal.

(Saying all that, I do like the alloys on the M135i)

Lol don't get me wrong Kevin I love my Z4 it was a bargain but would I pay 32k for another 2.0 Z4 assuming BMW aren't doing the contribution like before, if not then against the M135i that starts at £29995 it's a no brainier to go with the 1er, you'd be daft not too purely for the performance. Whilst I probably would prefer a 35i Z4 I'm not paying for a new one when the 1er is probably a better alrounder bar the roof. OK the Zed looks better but not 10k better just for the engine and looks IMHO.

Like you say I may not stay BMW, the Golf GTI appeals but again is a bit blitzed by the M135i for only a little more outlay.

Tim.
