Been offered a straight swap Z4 for M135i

My local dealer sent me out a flyer with their VIP event. The usual sales jazz of its only for existing customers and the deals will not be repeated, etc.

Anyways, it got me in the mood to have a look at the market and see what was about. I contacted a dealer down in England and told them my deal was simple. I wanted their car but just wanted to put down a small deposit and swap my car over for the same outlay a month. They had the M135i M sport for £26k, good spec, 2013 plate with Low Milage.

I must admit I am torn.

On one side I go to the more practical M135i, performance that has a flirt with the top of the range Z4's

However it's not as special as the Z4..... I could drive down my street 10 times and no one would bat an eyelid at the car whilst the Zed announces my arrival at any destination.

Any advice?

I feel I will never have a car more beautiful than the Zed

Clearly keeping you awake too haha

What you have to remember is, you wouldnt have even thought about changing had you not recieved the flyer.

Plus the M135i is a great car, but as you say it looks too subtle. They are not special enough. We drive Zed's because we like the attention the cars get (some wont admit to that :P ).

Its youre money of course, however if you have the itch for more power theres always the Z4 35i or 35is which can be had for not too much more money.

+1 on the 35i

We  ours to bits.

We are waiting for the M135i 8 gear auto to come down to sensible levels of depreciation.

It is the best do most things car I have ever driven in so many aspects.

The engine and zf 8 speed are so well matched IMO.

If only it can with hardtop folding roof !!!!!!

The dct in the z is slightly faster thru gear changes but the zf gearbox when been driven softly in heavy traffic is smoother.

If you need to worry less about the Z every day and have more practicality then go 135. If you have other cars in the household then practicality isn't so much of a concern so keep the car you love.

The temptation to always change cars looms in us all but unless there's a real issue with the Z I'd keep what you have. The payments may well remain the same but presumably your paying for a longer term as you're starting again? Do you want to keep paying out forever?

Do what? The DCT changes are seamless in normal mode. What you're sensing in the ZF box is torque converter slushiness my friend! ;)

Maybe I'm a bit old school and its probably treading over old ground but I can't get my head around these lease schemes!

Depreciation, profit and interest rates must be built in to the monthly payments.

What would the deal be to order a new M135i as the APR may work out cheaper as opposed to a AUC. As Maniac pointed out it boils down if you need the practicality however it would be good to drive the M135i back to back with an E89 35i as I have a feeling the M135i would be a better drive at speed and on the twisties. From all the road tests i've been reading on the M135i it appears to be a very accomplished all rounder with practicality to boot, what more could you ask for?. I specced a new M135i up the other day without going over the top, metallic paint, sunroof and was around 33k which is a bargain for the performance on offer. The Zeds prettier but lacking IMHO :?

My only concern with AUC top end performance BMWs is you can bet it will have been caned, I would be a little hesitant even with balance of the warranty.

I'd be tempted - the M135i has received pretty mega reviews all round. Engine probably sounds a lot fruitier than your Z4 too.

Not sure how you can come to this conclusion if you've not driven a Z4 35i Tim ? Or have you ?

I haven't no which is why it would be good to drive both back to back but my pre drive thoughts would be the 1er would be better, it has a roof for starters, thé E89 across the range ers on the soft side

The thing I'd hate is being just another 1 series. In the wash of 116d/116i's on every road.. No individuality. Only those in the know would know what it was.

Dear god you've definitely not driven one. My car, with adaptive ride is very stable and nowhere near soft. That plus a lower centre of gravity and oodles of power makes a good drivers car. The 1'er will win only in that its more everyday IMHO. They're still a nice car but too 'family' to make it special, again just my feeling on it.

Your bound to say that Gary you own one, go take an M135i for a spin and report back  Looks aside you can't ignore the 1er

It has many plus points IMHO.

yes but it does lock up between gear changes..

the seven speed is just amazing for what it is.

Jag have it as the gearbox of choice in their new 2 seater

For me it's a the tart at the bar Vrs a wife here!

Z4 is gorgeous and she turns a lot of heads when she is out and everyone thinks what a lucky man!

M135i is like a wife material. She is nice to look at but the performance and stats behind her are amazing and you probably fall in love with her more and more with the days that go past.

You see the bind I'm in!

Decisions, decisions???

I would suggest if your out for a serious car, with serious performance. To go and play with in the bends and drive! Go for the 135i, you can always come back to a zed after 6-12 months once you've had your fun and itching for the looks back!

If you're not intending to do that, stick with the Zed.

From memory, isn't yours a 2.0l and non Msport package?

(I only ask the question and don't intend ANY criticism here!)
