BBS 108 split rim refurb recommendations

Hi all,

I have the BBS 108 split rims on my Z4. Pretty good condition considering their age but I'd like to get them back to as good as new.

I've called around 10 wheel refurbishment places local to me and their answer is all the same...

'No we don't work on these', reasons being; too labour intensive, too busy, or too much hassle with bolts shearing.

I've found 1 guy somewhat near me who is ultra high end, charges a fortune.

Anyone got recommended shops in UK for this work, preferably around Midlands, East coast, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire area?

Cheers

I recently used the Wheel Specialist who charged £180 per wheel. However the initial wheel that went in had 9/20 cross threaded bolts so they said to save me time and money to just buy a "used" alloy that hadn't been taken apart before due to less chance of cross threaded bolts. I have now decided to ignore all the remaining wheels in case I have a similar situation of trying to find a second hand alloy, especially a rear one.

My neighbour (also a coupe owner), had a set of 108s refurbed to a high standard for about £100 a wheel and the going rate around here is around £75-£80 for one piece wheels.

If yours are in good shape it would make more economic sense to sell them for good money, buy a rough set for less and get those refurbed instead. Or just buy a refurbed set and sell yours (Simon Ireland on FB is a good bet).

OPA do a good service where they will give you a refurbed set in trade in for a rough set (i.e. hot swap) for £275 including swapping the tyres, but I don’t think he does 108s unfortunately. It’s a cheap route to a decent set of wheels though.

I had mine done by the wheel specialist in Fareham, excellent job, but I split them myself. Would recommend you split them unless you don’t mind paying an inflated price… mine bolts all came out no trouble, but then I may have been lucky!
Take it slow and work on opposite bolts.

Well worth the effort!

My 2nd Coupe had 108s but luckily a previous owner had them refurbed a few years before I bought it.

After reading the horrors of broken bolts when splitting them and refurb costs I bought a set of 295s (E89 wheel) and sold the 108s while they still looked good!

Doesn't really answer your question, but that was my solution.

Had mine done just last week.

£400, including two different colours (the inner barrel is black) and yes, split. No problems.

Sorry mate, up here in Scotland.

Thought it was worth mentioning - I contacted three places and none were too bothered about them being split rims. The shop I ended up using charged an extra £15 per wheel for splitting them over standard prices.

Theres a fella on the ‘BMW Z4 UK owners club’ facebook page, that refurbishes all Z4 wheels to a high standard. He’s in Lincoln. Pop in there and search for Simon Ireland. I bought some ellipsoid wheels from him and they are perfect…

Nice. Think I found him. Will send him a message. Cheers

Update; found him, had a chat. This is the guy!

Ok, another question...
Found these images, I want to ask the OP what colour of bronze he used. Any ideas?

I had a set done cheaply at City Wheel Refurbishment, Birmingham. I split them myself. Had to use a M7 x 1 tap to clean out the threads before reassembly.

How many bolts sheared? Any tips?

No bolts sheared, but a few were quite tight. I'm very surprised anyone has managed to snap a titanium bolt.
I used penetrating fluid and if they got tight when winding them out, I wound them back in and out again a few times to free them.

Just had my 108s split and refurbed by Triple S over in Bingley (West Yorkshire). Done a fantastic job. 5 bolts sheared so I just had some spares posted out to them from ebay and job's a good'un. Get the car back tomorrow so will post more images then. I opted for a standard looking finish, although the outer rim is no longer polished.

Who did them for you please?

In a similar situation here in the Netherlands. Got my hands on a used set of 108's, but they definitely need a refurb (priced accordingly). Wheel shop I contacted all don't work on split rims or on 108 specifically. Might be selling them if I cannot get them done.
