I don't know what's up with me today ... Once I was left with the shell in the back I decided to pull the trims off the tailpipes as theyd been doing my head in for a while as they are black instead of silver! Need a good polish. As if I didn't have enough to do!

Washed all the carpets ... Really really can't be arsed putting it all back together! Hopefully it isn't raining on Friday, not working and hoping to drive to brum in it on Saturday ...

Is it worth sprinkling a light dusting of talc over the inside of your boot to tell where water coming from?-can be hoovered out afterwards-just a thought?
 
Cheers Andy , not a bad idea at all. I'll get some on the way from work tomorrow. Can only do the car a favour ... Back end doesn't smell that fresh ATM. It is like looking after a baby!

Or the OEM roof tarp which has been fitted for the past 2 weeks interfered with the boot lid seals sufficiently to allow such a huge volume of water in.

Where does the partial tarp cover fix to? Does it not hook under wheel arches? You didn't nip anything in the boot seal rubbers did you?

It doesn't fit like some of the covers I've seen on here which have magnets under the shut of hinge for the boot. This must be an older design and has like an elastic which loops under the boot lid (it think that's how it was supposed to fit). Initially I wasn't sure and tooled it into the boot itself but then decided it wasn't right and fitted the band under the boot but I didn't think at the time it was interfering with the seals. Needless to say I haven't put it back on ...

Given your extensive attempts at reproducing the water ingress have failed the tarp is perhaps becoming a serious suspect. You could put it on again and give it another hosing down to see if it was the cause.
 
OK this may not be the case for you, but I also had a problem with wet carpets in the boot (left hand side only) I also had watering cans etc and could not find where it was coming from....

But then I found something interesting on another forum. A BMW mechanic from the US said, if you have a Z4 and park it on a slope 'nose up' then you will end up with water in the 'trunk'. Now my drive is on a slight slope and I always parked it 'nose up' Just to prove it, I started reversing onto the drive so it was 'nose down' and behold - the boot has been bone dry ever since.... :thumbsup:

That's possible cheers , there were a few things which it could have been but didn't find the answer definitively ... However it was parked slightly on a slope on the drive and since this happened I have parked it nose down only also. No water in since. Very confused all round but happy there's been no ingress since.

However didn't realise the drivers window hadn't gone all the way up for some reason and just washed the car ... Drenched the cabin and my seats which I conditioned yesterday. Can't seem to do anything right with this car, plus it needs jump starting today even though it just about started yesterday after a couple of weeks stood there.

Mine also happened when facing nose up on the drive, but I couldn't replicate.

Is it possible the water sits on the back of the hood, and works its way through the fabric?

Cleared out the drains whilst I was at it. Someone said it was a one way valve ... I really wouldn't flatter BMW by calling it that!

Firstly can't believe what a ball ache it is to get to the top mounts, ie for a spring change! And secondly can't believe after the volume of water found I can't even get it to reproduce a drop.

So ... I'm waiting now for the rain to do its work and see if it floods again. If not .. Drive it to generate spray. And if nothing still ... I may have to hold my head in shame and put it down to possibly not closing the boot properly for the week it was sat there in the torrential rain ... Or the OEM roof tarp which has been fitted for the past 2 weeks interfered with the boot lid seals sufficiently to allow such a huge volume of water in.

I'll update if I ever find out for future reference.

Hi mate pretty sure you have what I've just had fixed (although waiting for car to come back from BMW) - in a nutshell my boot, my carpets, and even the fuel pump got full with water. Like you I took everything out and couldn't replicate the problem. That's because the problem is only found when you access the top drain holes which I think can only be done by taking the roof off! There the drainage hole is tiny and once the drains are full backs up with water and any debris that has made it's way into the drainage outlets then causes it to pour in through the back and into the boot..... I guess nose down stops the water going in the boot and maybe slowly drain through the debris? When I get the car back ill try and post pics - I've had extra drain holes drilled in the plastic as my BMW stealer has done 3 or 4 of these and it's stopped the problems with no returned vehicles apparently.....

Cheers Smudgers. Really appreciate that, would be useful to see any pics you could add once you have them. Hope it fixes yours!

I've hardly driven mine this month, kind of put me off with this and the poor weather. That said, I think the sump is dry ATM but that has been parked nose down and lower drains cleared.

While I was cleaning my roof at the weekend I could hear the water trickling into the drain, I bet that drain is not level on the top i.e. the back edge is lower than the front then as you point out, overflows into the boot, unless you park nose down....
 
No the top drain holes are located in the bottom of small sump areas one each side so you'd need quite a lot of water to be retained before it overflowed into the boot. Parking on an incline is unlikely to make much if any difference at all.
 
Yes i understand that GreyZed, cheers. Many a how-to on the drains and you can see them on the offside by peering down the side of the hood when open.

Unfortunately I haven't found the cause and thus fix for my pretty significant leak but avoiding the nose being tipped up the incline by changing where I park (large undulating drive) has soooo far prevented the problem. Obviously this could be completely coincidental but a bit like some people and religion I'm relying on it for the minute until it floods again ... Haha. I will update if ever found.

BOOOOOOOOOOOM. offside rear spring just went whilst sat stationary, having just earlier gunned it on a a smooth straight with the GF in the car. Terrifying thought. 50k miles, 06 reg. Can't quite believe where the spring fracture position is, car has dropped to the floor and went with a gun shot. edit - the release of the spring from it's compression actually raised the rear end then dropped itself unlike most things i've read on here of people just finding it broken with knocking. Violent and dangerous.

Thinking about it ... might as well dismantle the boot as per this thread and save some labour pounds :cry: Typical timing, just as the sun is due down here and I was supposed to be using it for the gf's bday this weekend. bugger.
 
+ another one for suspect roof drain tubes......I've read somewhere ( on this forum) that BMW recommend leaving the plastic ferrul and rubber "tit" off
