Battery discharge time question.

Hey guys,

Does anybody have a good idea of how long the battery charge on my 20 month old 35is will last before it fails and will leave the car needing resets etc,? It's pretty well charged now but won't be completely full, I last ran it standing still ticking over for around 40 mins approx 10 days ago. Currently I don't have electricity in the garage I rent so no hook ups yet. I won't be able to get to it now for a good couple of months at least, if it won't last until say end of February I'll have to sort something out with moving it. The auto lights are off, but the alarm is on with the warning light blinking.

Any ideas gratefully received thanks.

Hi john, I'd say 2 months would be pushing it with the alarm on-more like half of that in my opinion.
Any chance you could hook up a solar charger to extend it a bit? :?

That's a good idea Rob, I hadn't thought of that. I can't get to it myself but my mate could hook one up, great idea thanks.

@Mike-exactly my worry Mike, that and you need to reset everything.

I would check with the dealer if there would be any issues at leaving it for months disconnected. I know a lot of Porsche owners do that over winter but I am just concerned with BMW about getting in "Transport mode".

My first Z, I killed my battery at 2 years by not having a trickle charger on it over that time. Fortunately, it was warranty but that was the trigger for me to get a trickle charger.

Hmmm...I don't want it to go into transport mode. I like Mr bears idea, it's a shame to have to buy two chargers as I already have a c-tek but better that than messing around and potentially killing a battery. The E85 will need trickle charging as well. Solar it is.

But you live "ooop Norf", so you get what, 1 hour of daylight per day? :poke:

Indeed true enough, however the sun shines on the righteous my friend so the problem will be preventing the chargers from overload.... 8)

The sun shines out of your *rse as well, but that is no good for where you car is parked though

Just to make this more messy, the N54 oil pressure at idle is not that great, you need to drive it to get full pressure around the engine and avoid premature wear.

I have a solar charger & whilst nowhere near as powerful as a trickle charger, a decent one will slow the rate of discharge down

That's surprising, I thought they had intelligent, variable output pumps to supply the correct pressure at all times-like the water pumps? :?

Yes I don't normally just idle it Maniac but needs must, I can't now drive and won't be able to for months. It was better than letting it die, but I need a better solution so it can be left standing without running it.

Don't bother with solar chargers john, theyre sh!te. Had 2, both binned.
Stick it on the ctek every 2 weeks to full charge and ur good to go.
Me ol fella has 8 cteks permanently hooked up to his little collection of 70's bruisers as he likes to jump in any of them at any to me for a razz around the streets of his local manor.
Convinced me to get one but u only have to hook it up for max 5/6 hours to refresh a half-discharged battery. As long as its in good nick that is.

I forget where I read it, some technical documentation on the N54 forum I think. Definitely not an engine to have sat at idle very long, big complex engines requiring a lot of oil means circulation can take a long while at cold. I'll see if I can find the docs on it.
