Battery choice

I have an e89 23i 2009 which is not a stop start. When I put in the Reg on various web sites it comes up with various choices including stop start batteries. At the moment it is fitted with a stop start that is 30 months old but is not holding the charge. The car is charging at 13.6v.
My question is has anyone fitted a non stop start to an e89 .?

Mine is the same age and model as yours, I fitted a Varta start_stop AGM in mine, it is identical to the original battery supplied in the car new. It has to be registered to the car.

Shouldn't the charging be around 14.5v? I may have that wrong, but maybe it's not holding charge because it's not getting enough?

The battery has been on a ctek 5.0 for 48 hrs and does not want to go over 11.8 v.The car starts and runs ok,I just don’t want to get caught out and be left with a car that won’t start etc,I will get a new battery,I was wondering if the stop start battery is an overkill ,when a std battery will do the job.

You need an AGM battery 70ah or 80ah..correct terminals etc.

Then registered and maybe coded depending on if you change sizes..maybe a good idea to check the coding anyway..at that age someone may have gashed it previously..

Hi, I am just about to renew my battery too, I also have a 2.3i (2010). I took advice off here and elsewhere, In summary if you deviate from original spec not only will you have to “register “ the battery you would also need to “re-code” too with the new spec. The whole stop start thing threw me too, as mine also isn’t a stop start Z4, however it’s the AGM part that is key, ours were originally fitted with these as far as I know, and it’s coincidence that AGM are fitted to stop start vehicles which are becoming more and more common so it makes sense to state “stop start” on the battery labels etc.. I have literally just bought the Bosch S5 A08 battery which is an AGM type battery, same spec as original VArta BMW battery 760A 70ah. This will not need “re-coding” but will need “registering” to the car. If you don’t know already, “Registering” is so the car knows you have fitted a new battery and can therefore charge it accordingly. To register the battery you will either need to get a garage to do it or buy a code reader capable of doing that function. I currently have a Creator C310+ reader which I bought for my previous E85 Z4 however this doesn’t have a battery register function 💩 So I have just splashed out on an AUTOPHIX 7910 which does. It cost £84 but as I always do my own servicing it is worth investing in, probably sell the C310+. Hope this helps

My car shows 14.5 to 14.7 volts on the Foxwell obd reader, engine running (only checked yesterday in fact)..

Just had similar problem with an aircraft battery. Over a week of use battery would eventually not turn starter. The volt output was 13.6 (told that was enough, but not so). I reset the regulator to 14.2 and charges ok, doesn't go flat with use now.

Think stop start battery is good option, one i fitted to my Z. One would think a more robust battery.

I took the faulty battery back to ECP today ,they checked it with their fancy meter and confirmed it was faulty.Their was 4 months left on the 3 yr warranty..They replaced the battery with no cost to me.Exide AGM 70amp.So a good result.

That's great news.

The alternator will supply different voltages depending on the current state of charge of the battery. If the battery is already charged then it'll only supply the full 14V~ when braking. The rest of the time it'll be at a lower voltage unless the battery is low.

Thanks for that Steve.I only bought the 7910 yesterday and have not had chance to check it out yet.

Thanks for that Steve.I only bought the 7910 yesterday’,I registered the battery today but I can’t see an option to code the battery.Saying that I am not very familiar with these scanners,so I could be missing the obvious. If we could arrange a time for me to pop around I would be grateful.

Just bought a Bosch AGM type96 for mine from batterymegastore.co.uk
It is still on the original battery from 2014 so really needs to be done as it does not do that many miles and will sit for days on the driveway.

Next step is to find somone in Kent to register for me

Good choice. I replaced mine with an Exide battery as the original OEM was Exide too. Barely lasted 18 months before a cell failed. Been replaced with a Bosch and it's going strong. Start stop function kicks in more regularly too.

On the subject of stop / start, how would I know if my recently purchased e89 2010 2.3 has this function ?
It's ready for a new battery, the existing one is not original and not AGM . I'm told that if it's not the correct battery or it's exhausted the start stop won't work anyway. Do some Z4 have it and some not , optional extra ?
