Battery Charging Assistance

Hi everyone,

In line with the battery issues some of us are facing this winter I may need some assistance.

My car has had starting problems since I let the battery run flat last month, on and off. Anyway, finally removed the battery today and it is currently on overnight charge which I am hoping will bring it back to life, if not I'll go and buy another.

Anyway, dilema as follows, I have removed it from the car and locked all the doors etc but I am now wandering how an earth I am going to get it back in now the boot is closed. There is obviously no key for the boot. Can I use jump leads on the terminals in the engine bay to give the car some power to unlock the boot to get back in or am I going to have to find another way in.

Also, its on slow charge, will overnight be enough or longer, battery wasn't completely flat just not enough to start, all electrics were working ok. BMW dealer checked it over and said the battery was in good condition when I took it in and said there were no drains in the car.

Thanks in advance.

trickle charger is a must for cars that are stood around, they will keep your battery in tip top conidtion, the only put in a tiny charge also so will keep the battery nice and full without overloading the battery and damaging it.

Yes, and connect the charger on the points in the engine compartment only.

Car is actually my daily, I ran it flat a month or so ago after leaving radio and interior lights on when I was working on it one afternoon. Had to jump it and since then its never held a charge for very long. Now with the cold weather its lasting about 12 hrs and then going dead. My commute is not a long one and I am not getting the revs and speed up due to the snow which is not helping. Battery is now out of the car and slow charging so hoping that does the trick if not I'll replace it tomorrow. Doesn( sound like I'm the only one reading some posts on here.

Again I don't know much about batteries and someone else will confirm, but a CTEK charger is possibly more likely to revive the battery than the charger you're using now, and a CTEK is certainly cheaper than a new battery.

I would suggest that if the battery is caising problems now and with the weather likely to reamin as it is in the UK or get worse THEN get a new battery and a CTEK charger (I use one) to keep your new battery in top condition. You may 'revive' your battery for a short period of time but just when you need the car to start.......

Battery back in starter sounded much better than it has ever done in a while. See what happens tomorrow pretty cold tonight so a good test.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
