So I’ve ordered the ctek mxs 5.0 and 2.5 mtr extension.

Due on Friday, Amazon Prime delivery dates slow at the moment, but I’m definitely not complaining, lucky to get delivery’s at all....and it’s not as if this is an essential item.

My battery is an AGM one. Do I need to run a certain mode for it to get the best out of my battery, or does the whole charging cycle it goes through do that?

I set mine up today and it seemed to detect the type of battery itself. If not you just press the mode button until AMG lights up.
That's all well and good for a Mercedes, but what about our BMW's? :poke: :P

 It’s been a long day

Thanks.

I read somewhere you should recondition it once a year, What does this do and should I do it? Assume you just press the mode button?

It runs an extra stage in the charging cycle which apparently improves performance and longevity of battery.

Yes, press the MODE button until the 3 LEDs light up for CAR, AGM and RECOND.
I set the correct mode before connecting it to the car.

Hi all,
I too ordered a CTEK MXS 5.0 from Amazon, around £72 I recall.
I was a little concerned the supplied Connect Clamp maynot be long enough to reach both terminals, for anyone else thinking the same don't worry too much they do reach - but with little spare slack.

Why not just use the strut mount bolt on the right hand side of your pic for the earth? I know it's not the official earth point, but surely it must be a good earth anyway? The bolt's just a bit shorter but there's enough to clamp onto.

There is also a good earth about 20cm to the right of where you have the positive connected. That’s the one I always use.

The CTEK Recond mode is recommended to be used once a year on WET batteries only but not on AGM batteries as it’s for breaking down sulphation and reversing acid stratification which does not happen on AGM batteries as they are not flooded. It uses a voltage of 15.8v to deliberately gas the battery in a controlled way in order to re-mix the acid to get an optimised acid balance / mix.

Is it really verboten to connect a trickle-charger direct to the battery as you would in a 'normal' car?

Mine is connected direct on my E85 Z4. No issues.

But hasn't it previously been pointed out that the E85 doesn't have the IBS that the E89 does?

No, it's no problem to connect directly to the battery terminals.

Sorry I should clarify that I have an E85.

Yes, I was just clarifying that as I believe Buster has an E89 and may have read your advice as correct for him too.

Thanks. Don’t want to give misleading advice. I’ve amended my original post.

OK, try again.

What do BMW advise?

Engine bay, as you know. Hence my question, "Is it really verboten …".

Given your propensity to stick rigidly to BMW advice for tyre pressures, why are you even asking?
