Bargain Tools

What caused that?

Don't know Paul. The car had been driven a fair bit and was at a car show a week earlier. It was under close scrutiny by enthusiasts so nothing obvious. Yesterday it had driven only 1/2 mile from his house so no build up of heat on a what was a very hot day

I suspect given the intensity and the seat of the fire under the bonnet, a significant fuel leak or float chamber overflow at the carb. Once the fibreglass caught it really went up.

Sadly I didn't arrive until the fire brigade had done their work

That is such a shame, like you said - most likely leaking fuel and a spark to light it.

In the area where i grew up a local neighbour was welding his VW Scirocco in his garage ( this is a 1980s Story) - phone rang and he went in to get it- but didn't turn the torch of cue big fire in the garage.

Thing is this local neighbour worked for an Industrial Gases company so has a supply of welding gas (acetylene) in his garage that was lets say larger than most. The language from the attending fire crew when they saw what they had to tackle at what they thought was a domestic garage fire was pretty choice .

Thanks Markplant, they are amazing value for the money, wish I'd got the space to house a compressor, I think you get 3 years warranty as well.

When I saw a new post on Bargain Tools, thought someone had received the Chinese stuff from Amazon. Mine is due 23 this month.

Sorry if built your hopes up

Think my order is due the 23rd too, I can't see it happening if I'm honest but I hope I'm proved wrong :)

Don't get too excited over the compressor, it won't do particularly well at running air tools.

I have something that looks the same from Aldi. Coupled to a wall mounted hose, I've run every power tool imaginable on it from air gun, cut off tools, tyre inflation, metal cutter and spraying. Runs all well and I've sprayed many panels, so for an amateur mech I'd say it was a great piece of kit.

Whilst it will actually run stuff, the big air users like cut off tools and air chisels will rapidly empty it's tank, in seconds. The problem then is the compressors output simply won't keep up. I've just replaced my own, a Wolf one, but same CFM and 24L tank, with a Sip V twin with a 100L receiver. The old one would run my cut off tool for maybe 10 seconds before running out of puff whereas the new one will run it pretty much continuously as the compressor on it's own outputs something like 13cfm whereas the Lidl one is around 3.5cfm. Don't get me wrong, it's great for tyres etc and light duty spraying, but for serious air usage it just won't keep up. That said, I'll be grabbing myself an orbital sander, drill, connector kit and that extension hose myself, as they are good value..

I bet it runs out in no time at all.
I have a 3HP belt driven unit, with a 50L tank, so considerably more manly than the one Lidl sell, and I find that can't keep up sometimes when I'm running my impact gun.

Of course a smaller unit will be fine for pumping up tyre, and spraying paint, its all low volume use, as soon as you want something more heavy duty you will run into problems.

Fully understand guys, but for the amateur mech starting up it's a big step up from a 12v car tyre compressor.

For heavy work if fire up the v8 jeep. That has a 16cfm compressor driven off the engine. 3 gallon tank at 200psi with pressure drop to 100 for the air lockers or higher for tools.
Very handy and impressive changing wheels off road or inflating 35" tyres from 5 to 30 psi

Just a note... Been to Lidl this morning, and had to fight some old guy for the two extension hoses they had - I won :) Also grabbed an angle grinder, drill, spray gun, DA sander, accessory kit (inflators) and some swivel connectors..

They look and feel really good quality, will have a little play when I get home..

We'll the 23rd has come & Mr Postie didn't deliver my 2 x IR Thermometers, cant say I'm surprised, the questions is who's really going to bother to pursue Amazon for a couple of quid?

Could we all be victims of a con whereby loads of people are in it for a few quid each = tidy sum for the seller, or are we guilty of being greedy for wanting something at an uber cheap price, lets face it, any of us here could afford to find the £15 or so for its proper price.

I'm sure it's in a container on some vast container ship headed from China right now, along with countless 000's of tonnes ofnither tat and fakes :)

Personally I think that anybody who ordered one should ask for a refund if they do not receive what they bought.
Why should someone be allowed to keep other peoples money which could ad up to quite a sum.
