How are you enjoying the Coupe? Glad to see you back in a Zed mate, your roady was top notch!

Loving the Coupe! I actually have a hearing problem (have a hearing aid) and driving a fast roadster wasn't that enjoyable anymore due to the wind noise and the impact of it on my ears (just about deaf at the end of a long drive lol). I still have a convertible daily (2-series) but as it is brand new, the technology for keeping the wind out, is far better and less bothersome.

The Coupe obviously has a lot more power than what I had so far (except for the 911), and it really sounds better than the previous Zeds (OK, the K&N filter and catback Eisenmann take a lot of credit or that). Of all (affordable) sports cars I've driven, I still feel that the Zeds are the most reliable, at the level of a well maintained 911. In the events that we organise, most cars have had issues, except for Zeds and Porsches.

So I just might keep this one a little longer. :-)

I had a warning light for the brakes recently as well as a service warning. So I got the car to an independant garage (my nephew) for maintenance and to have a look at the brakes. I got the car polished at the same time as the paint needed that quite badly. Got the car back looking almost brand new, new brake disks and serviced. But also got less good news: seems that the engine has the well-known ticking noise. According to my nephew, repairs aren't urgent, but need doing nonetheless. So next winter, the Zed will be getting open-heart surgery and I'll have the crankshafts changed at the same time, combined with a remap. In total that should add about 50 to 60 hp to the car, bringing the power over the 300hp mark, up to about 320hp. Not a cheap fix & tune though... Has anyone else done this before?

Ticking noise is normal for a car that has sat for a while. Drive it again properly and it'll go.

In the long run, the valves will need replacement. I'm not driving the car on daily basis as well, and it is a common issue on the pre-2009 Zeds. It's not urgent, but I do want to get it sorted.

Sounds like the ticking is just an excuse to release some extra horses - as said its quite normal on the si, I like your style though

Well I had to get the missus convinced didn't I?
But honestly, my nephew said it would be better to get it sorted. I'll admit it IS a good excuse for extra ponies though :D

Missing the summer...

I’m intrigued on the camshafts you mentioned. I can’t find any race cams for the N52.

The schrick listed item states N52 on searches but actually is an N54 item from what I’ve researched.

Got a lot of info from here:

EDIT!!! Just realised you said crankshaft!

He said crankshafts plural so I reckon he meant camshafts, a replacement crankshaft would not increase the power either :? (Unless it’s a stroker crank)

You're right, I made a translation error from Dutch. I indeed meant the 2 camshafts and engine valves.

In which case I’m intrigued - have you found any performance camshafts or are you just putting in new stock ones as a refresh?

I’ll be putting sharper camshafts in, well my garage will do that. :-) Not sure where he will be getting the parts from, but I’ll keep you guys posted.

Awesome thanks!

So I've been playing a little with Photoshop te decide what I want to go for when modding met Coupé. I already bought gloss black 224 style wheels, taillight spray (black) and the carbon bootlip. I also have spacers from my previous Zed, for the front wheels. Further on the whishlist: aero side skirts, carbon M performance diffuser, quad pipes with 4 akrapovic (or similar)-look exhaust tips and probably a little more lowering. I'm not sure though which springs to take, as I already have the M-springs: so a little unclear to me how much it will drop with Eibach or H&R springs for example. Anyway, here's a before and after of the rear.

As for the front... I really don't know yet what I want. I like the aero front, but afraid it will make the car look backdated. Really like the Hamann front bumper, but unsure if it will suit the other mods... we'll see where I end up with that, lol. Would also like to change the standard single halo colour by installing led (or other type of bulb). Carly is also on the whishlist for programming of door lock, coming home lights, DRLs... Will be bankrupt soon.

I had my 224s done in gunmetal. They look great when perfectly clean

But the majority of the time looked dull and lifeless

I had the CSLs before but requires lowering to look good and quite harsh to drive as they are 19 inch. The Zed may become my daily drive. I already have black 224s waiting to be mounted. But hey... wouldn’t be the first time I change my mind, lol.
