Bad day part 1

My new set of Uniroyals RS3's turned up yesterday so booked a recommended mobile tyre fitter to come round today and fit them. He seemed very nice and my wife dealt with it while I was at work, paid him £40 and everyones happy.... that is until I get home and find he's damaged ALL 4 alloys!!!!!
I will obviously be speaking to him but how has this happened? Do you think he has been over zealous with the tyre lever or the alloys have been poorly refurbed in the past and were soft, or a bit of both? :( :headbang:

I am afraid that is the reason why I only let BMW change my tyres, only £48 for 4 and they break it - they fix it.

(and that has happened on my previous X5).

He's not used a rim protector between the machine head and the wheel. It's a small piece of plastic that prevents the machine head from damaging the finish when you first pull the tyre bead up off the rim, takes seconds to do and then you pull it away with the attached cord as the wheel starts spinning.

Looks like this; http://www.tyrebaydirect.com/1024-Alloy_Wheel_Protection/89877-Alloy_Wheel_Protector.html

This is one of the reasons I now change all of my own wheels and tyres, helped by the fact that my neighbour has fitting and balancing equipment at his place.

I'd be asking for him to pay the cost of a refurb..

Mike

Whooooaaa mr P , that's bad news  he must have had a crappy machine as opposed to the "touchless" ones .
There's no real need to even touch the rim face with a decent machine

I'll be asking him to pay for 4 of them!

Tell me about it :( why didn't he stop after the first wheel instead of doing it to all 4! :headbang:

Ive seen some guys proper struggling to remove runflats  especially 19s :( I bet putting the Uni's on was a dream by comparison

Bloody hell Paul, did he think you wasn't going to notice or care?

As per my text Pristine Wheels are really top notch, I had them do a couple wheels on a Jag I had, and they were better than OEM when finished, infact I had the other 2 done even thou there was no damage on them.

I do the same. Bmw normally do damage them, but as you say, they do make good without quibble. I always get them to price match too.

I have another issue with BMW which will be "bad day part 2"

The tyre fitter has admitted liability and agreed to send round a BMW approved wheel repair man! It's a good start although I'd like some references from this mr wheel repair man. To be fair to the tyre fitter he held his hands up and admitted he really struggled to get the run flats off and had he known that they were fitted, he wouldn't have accepted the job. It would have been better if he'd held his hands up yesterday instead of hoping I wouldn't notice or even better, seen they were run flats and just said no but you live and learn I guess

A bloody tyre fitter that can't think a modern BMW has run flats, or look on the side walls to see if they are or not? Is'nt that his job? Then screws your wheels and runs, what a complete plank. :x

Rotten luck to get the clown Pastry, that with your paint issue as well, you'll need a beer or ten tonight. :headbang:

I think the '10' option sounds best  I had told him I had 4 uniroyals to fit so maybe it didn't register with him at first but as soon as he saw the car he should have known. I guess once he was here he wanted to earn a few quid and risked it but that has turned out to be an expensive decision!

Blimey you're not having much look at the mo :( Almost looks like he's used a bar to lever the old tyres off, absolute pants.

I've only ever use Event Tyres who use Hoffman machines on their vans which are touchless, admittedly though they've only done standard tyres and not runflats. Only mess up they made when they last did the Z3 was they put one of the rears on the wrong way round

I need new rear tyres and I've just been quoted £187 for a rear - but fitted by Halfords and £199 by my local Bmw dealer who looks after the car - after reading this I'm more than temped to just let the dealer do the job!
For the sake of £12 I'm not going to risk it!

I would ask the dealer Ronk if they change tyres in house or outsource the job and that they can guarantee no wheel damage.

I would avoid Halfords full stop simply because a friend used them to install a new Alpine head unit in her Z3 and put the electric hood down manually by forcing it, they didn't fess up to the damage but gave the car back with the hood up hoping she wouldn't notice
