Back in a M Roadster

IMG_20191204_165600.jpg]Yay! Back in a manual sports car!!

It's been a while. Owned a Z4MC a few years back but sold it as with two babies I never got to drive it much, but then went through:

S2000 (plus a daily) I know right, why sell a Z4mc to get a s2000?
E46 M3 Vert (plus a daily)
Lexus ISF
BMW 130i (modded with LSD, BMW Performance Intake and Exhaust)

And then decided to change tack and bought a Lexus LS430 for the luxo barge experience, whilst it's been relaxing and comfortable, it wasn't exciting. I really wanted a manual sporty car, and since I loved Hondas, I showed the Mrs a ton of of civic type r. Don't know why I bother really, as she hates them and tells me off for wanting something like that at my age (forties)

For some reason, I ended up watching loads of Z4m related youtube videos. I thought to myself, well the beemer does look better than civic type r, maybe......

Started trawling through the classifieds, and the coupe was out of my budget but the roadsters weren't too bad. TBH, I told myself nothing would come up really, but then Mike's roadster came up, and to cut a long story short, flight tickets booked and the long drive back from Glasgow with the car ensued!

Had a bit of a hooha with my insurance, with my existing supplier trying to charge me £1500 on the day! Got around it by buying temp insurance for a day to get me home. (With the excess at £1100, I drove slowly and very safely home. Glasgow to Notts on £42 tank fuel.)

I'll add some pictures shortly.

Thanks to Mike for the coffee and biscuits and guiding me to the petrol station!

Appreciate the memory of the coupe may be hazy, but first thoughts on the roadster were:

1. This roadster was the best condition one I had seen, better than 3 that I had originally looked at all those years ago!
2. To drive, the gear change was also the best. There was no notchiness or kangerooing at all! (Or am I a better driver now? :driving: )
3. On initial impressions it's better than my old 07 coupe! (or is it because I've been driving the L430 for so long, I would have loved any manual sports car!  )
4. One thing is clear - There's no hesitation so far, which sometimes appeared on my z4MC.

The E85 & E86 are like exceptionally fine wines in that IMO have become even better with age.

I had horrendous insurance issues with my first Z, then later found LV... especially if it’s a 2nd car & the milage will be low... am currently under £200 with the mods declared

Welcome back. How did you find the IS-F, guy on my road has one and always wondered what they were like to live with

I did! In fact I sold my S2000 for a Z4M, then sold the Z4 and bought my old S2000 back a few years later. S2000 is a much more fun car as a weekender, not daily granted, too raw for that. I just never got on with the Z4M, out of the 25+ cars I've had it's easily the biggest disappointment, even after spending thousands modifying it to try and enhance it.

I'm now in a manual E89 30i. Whilst I'm not trying to suggest it's a more competent car than the Z4M, it's far exceeded my exceptions. I was only going to keep it for one summer but really love it an exceptional value for money.

On the plus side, at least you went for the roadster this time :driving: :driving: :D

Welcome back.

Don't forget we like to see photos on here!

I had an S2000 as a daily driver whilst living London, and kept my Z4MC as a weekend and track car. The S2000 (with a modified exhaust and intake) was perfect as a daily driver but just wasn't raw enough to be a weekend car :P
Actually, I only sold the S2000 because I emigrated. I looked to buy one here, but they're disproportionately expensive. The cheaper cars are complete dogs, yet cost well over £10k, and to buy the equivalent of my UK S2000 would cost me about £17-20k. As a measure of my affection for my Zed, I shipped it here.

This thread ought to be renamed ‘Love Story’

Considering my Mrs calls mine the coffin, by the way things are going I will be buried in her

It was nice......and that was the problem....nice but didn't feel special....I found the gear change a bit slow and throttle response only any good when in sport mode. My biggest problem was that it was an auto....sometimes when I was pressing on, I would hit the gear change paddle and it wouldn't change with the first click that really frustrated me. The engine and exhaust note was nice, but not exhilarating, or perhaps should I say exhilarating enough. (I had a modified exhaust on as well, but a subtle one) I also didn't find it comfortable enough, but my back wasn't great then, so maybe that would change now. The final thing was, it wasn't enough of a looker. I bought it mainly with my sensible head on - it was a solid reliable V8. Where as I should have bought V8 Vantage Coupe and a second car. (Thinking back, it was the biggest value purchase I had ever made, face lifted in blue and it didn't make me fall in love with it as much as cheaper cars I had in the past. which made me feel that I didn't get enough value or bought the right car.)
