Back axle oils.

Thank you Mr wilks, I see your happy enough with 75/80 so just not happy with comma? Both are ap4 spec, do you also agree the same oil will go in the manual gearbox too?

I'm no oil expert , whenever i need any whether its diff, autobox, manual box or engine i simply input my vehicle details on Millers webpage then order the stuff from either Opie or off ebay & get my indy to do the change
Ive no clue what the Comma stuff costs but can't be much of a saving
like you i have no issue with millers or comma, so i am open to all suggestions.

ok im officially pissed off and utterly confused now,
i am going to change the gearbox and diff oils on mine and tugs zed, both 2005/6, both 6 speed manuals
i have spoken to both millers and opie now, opie says 75/80 in both gearboxs as 75/90 will be too thick and make for a stiff gearbox shift , while millers agree 75/90 should go in both cars diffs, millers say only my 3.0 needs the 75/80 and tugs 2.0 should have the 75/90 in front and back. wtf....

i think im leaning towards millers 75/80 trx synth for the gearbox and millers trx synth 75/90 for the diffs - your thoughts ?

I just copied these Castrol info sheets through the Opies website. They are what I put in my gearbox and diff back in April '17. Never had a stiff gearchange or anything seize up or leak etc etc

we are in the process of doing the gearboxes and back axles of out 2&3ltr e85's
having done mine i was shocked to find i had clean red fluid in the gearbox, seemingly newish but not in my 12 month ownership, any ideas what it was ? anyway, i put the 75/80 i had bought.
moving onto tugs car we were surprised to find no drain hole on his back axle.

it seems the humble e85 2.0 back axle dont have a drain plug just fill hole, unabashed we simply sucked it out with my pump, £8.22 off ebay and 2 meters of hose from B&Q, cut about 15" of hose which went into the bottle of oil, the other length of pipe went under the car and into the fill holes and that pushed it into the gearbox/back axle, simply reversing the drill allowed me to suck out the old stuff from tugs back axle., and then after doing both cars we went down the boozer ... stinking of transmission fluid .. so we were happy bunnies, the boozr was a bit full, so we had to park next to these..

i did have every intention of doing a proper writeup, honest.. but we forgot and just had a fun day doin the cars :D

It was a brilliant day, RW & me workin on our zeds together avin a right laugh, & free coffee all day is always a bonus

Couldn't believe how well both cars looked underneath close up (cos it was me doin all the wok as Roady is considerably older than me & struggles to get about without his zimmer  )

It's a strange thing though how the 2.0 has only 1 drain/fill hole in the DIFF  Where as the 3.0 has both drain & fill holes

However with roadys array of tools & gadgets it wasn't a problem. As mentioned above in RW's post the little pump connected to a drill was invaluable. It was good to see that both gearbox oils where clean & debris free. Although in roady's 3.0 a strange red colour, & mine also had a slight red tinge, both of us thought :idunno: but now know a change of oil will benefit our zeds.

Well, this took about 5 hours because we just spent most of the time tekkin the pis$ out of each other & i had a very occasional fag break & roady needed to sit down frequently

When the job was done and roady's garage looked like a bomb had hit it we decided we had to try out the wok we had done & the only way to do that was to test the zeds on a drive to the pub

So bidding "terrah a bit" to Rita, RW's wife, we shot off :driving:

Must say my zed was a LOT smoother through the gears especially between 1st & 2nd. Before, it needed a concerted effort to go into 1st then 2nd but now it is a lot easier. So a job well done.

As the photo's in RW's post show we had to park next to a pair of Macca's which was like a brilliant end to a brilliant day.

Cheers, tug.

That drill pump attachment looks pretty handy for this sort of a job. Might have to look at one myself rather than trying to hand pump fluid under the car next time!

tug wanted to give them cars a race but the owners were hiding in the pub cowering from the threat of racing tugs mighty 2.0 - or it could have been the overpowering smell of transmission fluid on our clothes and was filthy of course :)
as tug said, a good days work finished off with a pint - glorious

Does anybody know what the red stuff in the gearbox might have been, it was clean enough but I have no recent history on my car at all so it's a case of trusting nothing and doing your own maintenance so you know it's done.
Next it's plugs, another job nobody does because they seemingly last for ever, but as mine has done 103k..

Automatic transmission fluid is often red, and some BMW manual gearboxes use it, there should be a sticker on you box that lists the spec.
