Hello all,

After some time in a Porsche Cayman S and a TTRS I'm back in a zed. My search for a Z4 3.0 went very badly:

That said it is more fun than a 3.0. In fact, it is bloody mental!

Welcome back.

I reckon your search had a great outcome!

I'm presuming that is a roofless Z4M?
I like the car but am in awe of the wipers on your bay window.

They are Christmas decorations but I like the idea of having windscreen wipers though.

I don't have many pictures of the car, I bought it without an mot so it hasn't had much use yet.

MOT day tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Simply one of the most classical designs ever, BMW or other brands.
(Says a completely unbiased observer ;) )
I like the wheels

Agreed, they are very easy on the eye.

Lovely looking Z4. How do you find it compared to the Cayman and TTRS?

The Cayman S is perfect in every category except one. The chassis can take MUCH more power, I found this very frustrating at times. Here is my completely standard Cayman against a fully race prepped "M" car:

The TTRS is completely different. 340 BHP is perfect for the chassis and with the addition of a thicker rear anti roll bar it turns in very well. The sound is spine tingling, it accelerates through the gears like nothing else in it's class. I put it up for sale last week and I'm still doubting my decision. Here it is chasing down a completely stripped out Elise race car being driven by the team owner:

The Z4M is a bit doubtful for me at the moment. It squats under acceleration, nose dives under braking, doesn't turn in well and the back of the car feels extremely unstable during hard cornering. My old Z4 3.0 did none of these things. The spring rate at the rear feels completely wrong and the LSD just doesn't feel right on such a short wheel base car. I've only driven it a couple of times so hopefully I just need to get used to it or carry out some minor suspension alterations. Time will tell.

Thank you, I really appreciate the reply and videos So all three are very much different cars. One would assume Porsche limited the power out put of the Cayman so it did not out shine the 911!

It will be interesting to see how you get on with the Z4M

The base 911 has a similar power output to the Cayman S (300 bhp ish). I took my Cayman to Blyton park and my friend took his 911, there was very little difference between the cars.

Thanks for posting those 2 videos, I enjoyed watching them.

And I hope you find a way to gel with your MR.

The Z4 was never meant to be a superb sports car. The balance is not there (too long a nose?) and with time, I believe, it has become over engineered. It is a great car if you are NOT a really good driver, because it drives with easy. It makes you feel good, the top comes down, it draws plenty of stares, it is fun. If you still want a really incredibly performing Bimmer, stick to the M3. Preferably one generation back (my god, those new grills... :fuelfire: )

Maybe, I personally think the Z4 is a superbly balanced car. Here is my old Z4 3.0 at Cadwell punching well above it's weight:

My thoughts are that the introduction of an LSD to this car hasn't been done very well. I still think this car has potential, my initial thoughts are that the rear springs and ARB are a bit soft. It will be going to Donington in 6 weeks, I'll be able to take it by the scruff of it's neck and get a better feel for it then. :driving:
